The Antismoking Elite

A question from Smoking Lamp this morning:

why is this global elite so committed to antismoking measures?

I spent a while today thinking up a variety of different (and perhaps even contradictory) reasons why this might be so.

  1. The elites live comfortable, low-stress lives: they don’t need to smoke, and they don’t think anyone else needs to either.
  2. It’s the working classes that mostly smoke these days, and so smoking is seen as a working class proclivity. Elites don’t wish to identify with working class people.
  3. It’s the current fashion in elite circles not to smoke (just as once it was very fashionable), and the elites are as much slaves to fashion as anybody else.
  4. Elites tend to believe whatever “acknowledged experts” tell them about anything. So they believe what doctors tell them about smoking, and what climate scientists tell them about global warming, and the same with everything else. Members of elites tend to be successful in some particular narrow field, and to know a great deal about that field (and are themselves “experts” of a sort), but correspondingly less about everything else. For example, Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg have both been CEOs of successful companies, and so they probably have become highly skilled managers and shrewd businessmen. But the very process of acquiring these particular skills has been at the expense of other skills. The more they know about one thing, the less they know about everything else. It seems to be thought that if these people are successful businessmen, they will be equally skilful and successful in everything else. But most likely, when they’ve strayed out of their skill area, they’re likely to prove less skilful and less successful than other people, or to have highly conventional, ill-thought-out views.
  5. Elites of one sort or other (political, business, media, academic) tend interact with each other socially, and create their own elite culture with its own set of beliefs and values. One reason, for example, that MPs in the UK parliament all seem to be interchangeable with each other is perhaps the inevitable consequence of rubbing against each other for most of their lives. So while they may start out with opposing values, they end up with much the same ones. They could have ended up pro-smoking, but they actually ended up antismoking.
  6. Business owners want to see their employees working profitably, not sitting round smoking and drinking and talking. And as the power of workers’ unions declines, the power of company bosses correspondingly increases. And since elites tend to be in command of politics, business, and elsewhere, they tend always towards top down control. e.g. Population control, tobacco control.
  7. In a time in which there seem to be a small number of very wealthy people, the wealthy elites tend to be more influential than at other times, and it is what these elites believe (however their beliefs have been arrived at) that is promoted as the orthodoxy or consensus.

If nothing else, it’s simply that different cultural groups are always evolving and changing – much like with Impressionist and Expressionist and Surrealist movements in art -. And there’s no particular reason why cultural groups should become entrained with each other, and share the same beliefs and values at the same time. In fact we seem to be living in a time when different social groups are strongly diverging in what they believe and value. If 50 years ago there was something like a single culture with a shared set of common beliefs and values, we’ve now broken up into several different cultures. It may take a shared experience (like WW2) to create a single common culture, which then proceeds to slowly unravel over subsequent decades.

One thing that I’m not saying is that there is any sort of conspiracy among elites. I think that there is instead a natural process whereby beliefs and values are formed or eroded, and what we’re seeing is an unfolding process.

  1. Stomach bug come back and hit me today again. Its been like an epidemic here with it.

But personally I think the entire set up is a system left in place from 1900 that’s still around today.
If we look back at history its a pure carbon copy of the then progressives trying to invent their own perfect world as they saw it and their back. They tried with the leauge of nations a faikure as nobody wanted to give up national independene to any toady run world body.

Hense this below if we forget what they were up to even now:

The U.N., in the person of a communist bureaucrat and fossil-fuel billionaire named Strong, invented the climate scam because the pompous, squawking inadequates and misfits who populate its marble halls have long fancied themselves as Kommissars in the most exclusive club in the world – the Politburo of a global bureaucratic-centralist government.

They gave the game away in 2009 when, on Sept. 15, they published on an obscure U.N. website the draft climate treaty that, they hoped, would be triumphantly signed at the annual international climate yabbadabbathon at Copenhagen.

The draft, at Paragraphs 36 and 38 of Annex 1, explicitly mentioned that a global “government” would be established, with overriding powers of taxation, regulation and enforcement. This power of the Klimate Kommissars to compel independent-minded nations to do as they were told was delicately described in the treaty draft as a “facilitative mechanism.”

A 2 percent tax on every financial transaction worldwide was to be levied. Rich nations would be ordered to contribute a further 2 percent of GDP each.

And would this world “government” be elected? Did the words “ballot” or “vote” appear anywhere in that dismal draft? No. This was to be a tyranny-by-clerk, modeled on the unelected and now mercifully collapsing European Union, which – by a process of annual agreements and treaties whose content was kept so secret that in Britain the major treaties were actually classified until they had been inflicted on us and we could not escape – acquired supreme legislative and administrative power by little and little, while few noticed what was going on.]]

Pretty much covers the who and the why…………..That’s from your Blog Frank awhile back.

  2. Some French bloke says:

“In a time in which there seem to be a small number of very wealthy people, the wealthy elites tend to be more influential than at other times…”

Seems that was already true three full centuries before the Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey episodes you were mentioning a few days back: “Where some people are very wealthy and others have nothing, the result will be either extreme democracy or absolute oligarchy, or despotism will come from either of those excesses” (from Aristotle’s Politics, book 4)
‘Extreme democracy’ is probably to be understood as some sort of rabble-rousing, cheap populism, a pitfall the oppressed should try to avoid lest their counter-attack turn out to be counter-productive.

    • Frank Davis says:

That’s interesting. I’ve got Aristotle’s Politics lying around somewhere. I’ll see if I can dig it out.

Aristotle may have himself lived through one of the bouts of “extreme democracy” that afflicted Athens circa 400 BC.

New NIOSH Report Recommends All Workplaces Be Tobacco Free | Includes E-Cigarettes In Suggested Smoking Ban

    Posted on: April 7th, 2015

    • waltc says:

This NIOSH thing is open blackmail against smokers (“have a job or have a smoke; you can’t do both”.) it’s also blatantly about smoking not second hand smoke (which it barely touches on) since it would outlaw even separately ventilated smoking rooms and would not only hound smokers to quit but go after members of their families who have nothing whatsoever to do with “the workplace.” This is the elites trying to manufacture some Ideal Citizen, according to their lights, and feeling perfectly entitled to do it by coercion and blackmail aka “all necessary means,” and so dystopia arrives, throwing off it’s smiling mask and now baring teeth.

      • Yepper and I got 3 comments awaiting approval and all hand typed……….

There was only one single claim made that was true
No smoking around flammable or explosive areas.

The rest was all utter junk bullshit aimed via political hatred……. Niosh has no studies to back up a single claim made by whoever it was that wrote it,likely the ACS or Tobacco free kids.

        OSHA / NIOSH RESEARCH

In 1991 NIOSH { OSHA’ research group} Looked into ETS although at the time they recommended reducing ETS exposure they found the studies lacking.

NIOSH recognizes that these recent epidemiological studies have several shortcomings: lack of objective measures for charachterizing and quantifying exposures, failures to adjust for all confounding variables, potential misclassification of ex-smokers as non-smokers,unavailability of comparison groups that have not been exposed to ETS, and low statistical power.

Research is needed to investigate the following issues:

        1. More acurate quantification of the increased risk of lung cancer associated with ETS exposure, including determination of other contributing factors[e.g.,occupational exposures]that may accentuate the risk.

2.Determination of the concentration and distributuion of ETS components in the workplace to help quantify the risk for the U.S. working population.

a.The association of ETS exposure with cancer other than lung cancer
b.The relationship between ETS exposure and cardiovascular disease
c.The relationship between ETS exposure and nonmalignant resporatory diseases such asthma, bronchitis and emphysema, and
the effects of ETS on lung function and respiratory systems
        c. Possible mechanisms of ETS damage to the cardiovascular system, such as platelet aggravation, increased COHb leading to oxygen depravation,or damage to endothelium
d.Effects of workplace smoking restrictions on the ETS exposure of nonsmokersand ETS-related health effects in nonsmokers

After ten years of no conclusive research and lack of studies that didn’t eliminate the bias OSHA decided that the studies did not have substance and here is there present policy.

        Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS)

Because the organic material in tobacco doesn’t burn completely, cigarette smoke contains more than 4,700 chemical compounds. Although OSHA has no regulation that addresses tobacco smoke as a whole, 29 CFR 1910.1000 Air contaminants, limits employee exposure to several of the main chemical components found in tobacco smoke. In normal situations, exposures would not exceed these permissible exposure limits (PELs), and, as a matter of prosecutorial discretion, OSHA will not apply the General Duty Clause to ETS.

OSHA finally makes a statement on shs/ets :

Field studies of environmental tobacco smoke indicate that under normal conditions, the components in tobacco smoke are diluted below existing Permissible Exposure Levels (PELS.) as referenced in the Air Contaminant Standard (29 CFR 1910.1000)…It would be very rare to find a workplace with so much smoking that any individual PEL would be exceeded.” -Letter From Greg Watchman, Acting Sec’y, OSHA

        That’s the facts

        • 4700 hundred was even a lie only about 800-1000 actual chemicals have ever been trapped and identified. The rest they made up by claiming recombination.

      • Walt it was the CDC FOUNDATION that actually wrote that statement and NIOSH put their name on it………

Michael Bloomberg always boasts of how many lives he has saved in New York City. He thinks he is Louis Pasteur. He does not boast about his constant sexual harassment of female employees.
Or how much poorer NYC residents are that enjoy smoking $ 14.00 packs of cigarettes.

    • 60% of cigarettes sold in New York are smuggled: report

New York has the highest cigarette tax rate of any state, and nearly two-thirds of the state’s cigarette market is illegal, announced the think tank Tax Foundation on Thursday.

The Tax Foundation said that 60.9% of cigarettes sold in New York State are smuggled in from other states.

This makes New York the biggest importer of black market cigarettes, along with the state’s highest tax rate of $4.35 per pack. That’s compared to Missouri, the state with the lowest rate, of 17 cents per pack.

In New York City the tax rate is even higher, adding another $1.50 per pack to the state rate. It’s not uncommon for smokers to pay $12 for a pack.

The report said that tobacco smuggling and the tax rate have risen practically in tandem since 2006. The New York State tax on cigarettes has risen 190% since that time, as the rate of smuggling increased 170%.

This bears out a report issued last month by the New York Association of Convenience Stores, estimating that “chronic cigarette-tax evasion” deprives the state of at least $1.7 billion in tax revenue and 6,700 jobs.

Joe Henchman of the Tax Foundation, who co-authored the report with scholars from the Michigan-based Mackinac Center for Public Policy, said the smuggling takes place in various forms. In many cases, the smugglers physically transport the cigarettes into New York from nearby states with much lower tax rates, such as Virginia, a longtime tobacco producer with a rate of 30 cents per pack. The smugglers will often use counterfeit tax stamps to conceal the illegal nature of their wares.

Henchman said there have also been cases of New Yorkers making their own cigarettes as “kind of the equivalent of moonshine” and there have also been hijackings of tobacco trucks. But on a much grander scale, he said the Internet serves a primary role in illegal cigarette purchases.

Related: Tobacco companies ordered to advertise smoking risk

Also, he said that some Native America reservations sell tax-free cigarettes, and this is why New York State has a “long-running dispute” with the Oneida Indian Nation.

The Oneida Indian Nation manufactures its own brand of cigarettes called Niagra’s. The Nation says, on its web site, that it used to make the cigarettes in Buffalo, but moved its Sovereign Tobacco company to Oneida in 2010, “availing itself of a long-settled law that recognizes the right of Indian tribes to sell products they manufacture on their own reservations without interference from state laws.”

At the time, the tribe said that 15 people were employed in cigarette manufacturing, and that keeping those jobs on the reservation “will ensure that the loyal customers of the Nation’s enterprises are able to continue buying Nation-manufactured cigarettes at reasonable prices, free from New York State taxes.”

Representatives of the Nation did not immediately answer messages from CNNMoney.

Related: What would a legal marijuana industry look like?

Nationwide, the industry leaders are Reynolds American (RAI, Fortune 500), parent of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, which produces Camel, Pall Mall, Winston and other brands, and Altria Group’s (MO, Fortune 500) Phillip Morris, which produces Marlboro, Virginia Slims and Parliament.

“R.J. Reynolds works closely with law enforcement every way we can, however this is a law enforcement problem,” said R.J. Reynolds spokesman Bryan Hatchell, noting that the black market is a nationwide issue. “Governments are losing billions of dollars. Money spent on law enforcement will result in an excellent return on investment to the state.”

Altria spokesman David Sutton said his company also works with law enforcement to help officers recognize counterfeit products, and it tries to convince state governments to keep their tax rates within bounds, to avoid “unintended consequences” like a black market.

Sutton said the “very, very high” tax rate in New York “creates an incentive for criminal activity to provide product to consumers to avoid paying that high tax.” To top of page

    • Bootleg cigarettes, Prohibition and the death of Eric Garner

by Walter Olson on December 6, 2014

Eric Garner, asphyxiated during his arrest on Staten Island, had been repeatedly picked up by the NYPD for the crime of selling loose cigarettes. Washington Examiner:

The crime of selling “loosies” was not considered a serious one in the past. Many corner stores in New York City once sold them quietly upon request. But former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s cartoonish anti-tobacco crusade changed that and everything else. Smoking in public places was banned. Punitive taxes and a legal minimum price of $10.50 were imposed in an effort to push prices ever-upward, so that a brand-name pack of 20 cigarettes now costs as much as $14 in New York City.

As a result, the illicit sale of loose and untaxed cigarettes became more commonplace.

I noted at yesterday’s Repeal Day panel at Cato that according to figures last year, New York’s unusually high cigarette taxes had brought it an unusual distinction: an estimated 60 percent of consumption there is of smuggled or illegal cigarettes, much higher than any other state. Another way to think of it is that New York has moved closer to prohibition than to a legal market in tobacco. [earlier 2003 Cato study]

In his history of Prohibition, Last Call, Daniel Okrent cites (among many other law enforcement misadventures) the fatal shooting of Jacob Hanson, secretary of an Elks lodge in Niagara Falls, New York, in a confrontation with alcohol agents — though Hanson had a clean record and was not carrying alcohol. At the time, many saw Hanson’s death as reflecting poorly on the Prohibition regime generally. For some reason, though, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has drawn fire from some quarters for making a parallel observation about Garner’s death. [BBC; note however that while Garner’s frictions with the local NYPD seem to owe much to his repeated cigarette arrests, the proximate event leading to his arrest seems to have been his attempt to break up a fight]

  5. Tobacco Taxation and Unintended Consequences: U.S. Senate Hearing on Tobacco Taxes Owed, Avoided, and Evaded

Drenkard Statement to U.S. Senate Finance Committee July 2014

Hearing on Tobacco: Taxes Owed, Avoided, and Evaded
Before the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance

The high tax burden on tobacco results in de facto prohibition of the products, bringing all the undesirable outcomes associated with alcohol prohibition in the 1920s. In our research we have found evidence of substantial tobacco smuggling from low to high tax jurisdictions, violent crime, theft of tobacco and tobacco tax stamps, corruption of law-enforcement officers, and even funding of terrorist organizations through crime rings.

  6. Smoking Lamp says:

The antismoking perspective of the global elite may not be a conspiracy but it is certainly feed by collusion among the tobacco control organs (including the quasi-charities, the FCTC, and bureaucrats) who quell dissent and extract public funds to build political power.

    • They call it political graft. Anyone in power pays off their folks if they win. Some are more corrupt than others and with the UN the EU and every other place in the world its the same…….only at the world level their more graft to pluck when your shaking down every country to get it!

On the subject, Snowdon has a video of a Patrick Basham speech that’s well worth watching. I think his headline is “A Sunday Sermon.”

  8. Rose says:

why is this global elite so committed to antismoking measures?

Because it’s a fashionable cause for bored rich people who have more money than they know what to do with?

“Eugenics would have been so much bizarre parlor talk had it not been for extensive financing by corporate philanthropies, specifically the Carnegie Institution, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Harriman railroad fortune.

They were all in league with some of America’s most respected scientists from such prestigious universities as Stanford, Yale, Harvard and Princeton.”

Meanwhile, now the real reason for smoking bans on hospital grounds is emerging.
Social engineering – as if we hadn’t already guessed.

Hospitals bring in more staff to tackle smokers

“EXTRA support staff will be deployed to advise smokers against lighting up in hospital grounds after staff and patients were spotted puffing away just days after new rules were introduced.”

“The policy’s introduction will be “challenging”, she admitted, but she said it was important to change the attitudes of staff, patients and visitors towards smoking.”

“Enforcing the ban could put extra strain on stretched resources said Sheila Duffy, chief executive of health charity ASH Scotland, who said the new rules were about changing people’s attitudes towards smoking.

She said: “I think the policy is about trying to change the way we think about smoking.”

“For the next generation we want to put cigarettes out of mind, out of sight and out of fashion.”
    http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/health/hospitals-bring-in-more-staff-to-tackle-smokers-1-3740726

“HOSPITALS are bringing in wardens, staff training sessions and blaring out loud tannoy messages to try to ensure all visitors abide by rules to keep their grounds smoke-free.”

Must be detrimental to the health of recovering patients with all that racket going on day and night.

It’s somewhat ironic that the only people loudly and persistently advertising cigarettes these days are the anti-smokers, they made sure that there is a picture of one on every door just like the Ghostbusters sign which didn’t deter anyone from watching the film.

  10. Lets see your driving up to that diner you smell that wondeful cooking food:

Youve just inhaled about 10,000 ciggys from that wondeful smell worth of normal ciggy chemicals.

Then you demand a smokefree outdoor dining area where you continue to breathe in another 30,000 ciggys of equivalent chemicals and smoke.

Then your food arrives with at least another 50,000 ciggys worth of equivalent chemicals in the food. Then lets toss in some Nicotine to the mix those french fries or those tomatoes with that nice big piece of hamburger or steak your about to eat…….You see solsenae plants like potatoes and tomatoes contain lots of nicotine naturally. Want tea to drink add a few more ciggys of nicotine to your outdoor dining pleasure.

Meanwhile if you had just let a few smokers back inside you could have avoided all those vented off outdoor millions of ciggys worth of smoke and chemicals……

But alas when activism driven insanity makes public laws and policy, well once you learn the facts you kinda feel like the fool of a vast conspiracy ehh!
