One thing I turned up over the last couple of days was that Jackie Kennedy smoked a cigarette as she sat outside the trauma room in Parkland hospital in Dallas.
I didn’t know she smoked. I’d never seen a photo of her smoking. But according to the Sun:
Jackie also loved smoking. She avoided being photographed with a cigarette in order to keep her clean-cut First Lady image, but had a three-pack-a-day habit for 40 years.
She wouldn’t be allowed to do that now at Parkland hospital, I bet. No male nurse would light her cigarette today. Instead she’d be thrown out of the hospital. And quite likely thrown out of the hospital grounds as well. She’d probably be standing out on nearby six-lane Harry Hines Boulevard.

In our ever-deepening prohibition era, a day or so back I caught some story about alcohol advertising being banned somewhere. I couldn’t find it again, but found another one along the same lines from Ireland, where plans to restrict alcohol advertising are about to be released. And who else was backing it but Gerry Adams:
Mr Adams said the legislation was “hugely important for the health of our society.
“Some 500 people die each year from alcohol-related cancers, there are three deaths every day due to alcohol and approximately 1,500 hospital beds are occupied as a result of alcohol-related illnesses.”
He said liver specialist and chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance Prof Frank Murray had warned of the enormous lobbying against the Bill by the alcohol industry.
I wonder how many people used to die each year from IRA-related truck bombs, thanks to health-conscious people like Gerry Adams.

Calls have been made to ban the Coca-Cola truck from Liverpool this Christmas amid concerns about obesity levels in the city.
Liverpool’s Liberal Democrat leader Richard Kemp said the city is “in the grip of an obesity epidemic”….
He wrote: “You are probably aware that Liverpool is in the grip of an obesity epidemic for children and adults. 30% of our 11-year-olds are obese.
“The biggest single cause of this is the consumption of fizzy drinks.
“That is why I am appalled that there is a rumour going round that you will welcome the Coca-Cola van to Liverpool. This cynical event has taken place for the past five years and is not designed to welcome Christmas but to increase the consumption of a product that is grossly unhealthy.”
Whatever Liverpool may be in the grip of, it certainly isn’t an “obesity epidemic”. There’s no such thing, just as there isn’t a smoking epidemic or a tobacco epidemic either. Anyone who says there any such epidemic is lying.
And if 30% of Liverpudlian 11-year-olds are “obese”, it is because they’ve been re-defined to be obese, by changing how obesity is measured. They’re probably actually just very well-fed children, and everyone should be glad of it.
And I used to drink lots of Coca Cola back in the 1950s and 60s. And never put on any weight at all. And nobody else did either.
This is a cultural war. It has nothing to do with health. Antismoking is anti-American. Anti-Coca Cola is equally anti-American. That’s where they both come from, much like Vodka from Russia, or Whisky from Scotland, and Champagne from France.

As for the 30% childhood obesity, almost all kids drink fizzy drinks; therefore, 70% of the kids that drink fizzy drinks do not become obese and thus, fizzy drinks are very ineffective at ‘causing’ childhood obesity.

I’ll look for the link….i’ve long noted the attack on traditional symbolic American food. Started in the 70s with apple pie and ads listing the toxic additives in commercial pies. Then hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries and Coke…I think it’s as much a class war as a cultural war and, in a sense too, a war of Djilas’s New Class (bureaucrats) against everyone.
It is instructive that the first salvos in the renewed Temperance quest for Prohibition of alcohol are being made by the MTA Board. The MTA Board (like many public authorities) isn’t an elected body but rather an appointed body with little public accountability. The board is accountable to the politicians that appoint them. I guess the days of ubiquitous Newport ads on the Broadway Local were long gone.

I used to smoke Lucky Strike plain. Do any of the major manufacturers even make non-filter cigarettes any more?
I don’t think they do in EU, because of the limits on tar and nicotine. Even if they did, I’m sure they’d be very different to the ones advertised above.
