I’ve been reading All Quiet On The Western Front.
There’s lots of smoking in it. Of cigarettes and cigars. Even in the front line. It’s a big mistake to put your head above the parapet at night with a cigarette in your mouth: it’s an easy target for a sniper. This is one way that smoking really does kill.
It is perhaps the only way that smoking kills: in the trenches, careless smoking kills.
The war on smoking would make sense if smoking kills. But smoking doesn’t kill. The war on smoking is driven by an irrational hatred. What do they hate so much? Who knows? And who cares?
It’ll be the death of Tobacco Control and Public Health when people eventually realise that they’re driven by irrational hatred. They’re engaged in witch hunts against witches that don’t exist. Climate Change is another such witch. Asteroid impacts. Covid 19. All imaginary witches. Little things exaggerated into existential threats.

The hatred of smokers is similar to the current hatred of persons who do not get vaccinated. They’re selfish, stupid trash.
There is, in fact, a remarkable similarity between all of the anti-smoking movement’s tactics over the years and those of the Covid hysteria-producers. You can literally take a piece of pumped-out anti-smoking propaganda, change a few words and describe a different target group in the same way as smokers have been described over the years and – hey presto! – you’ve got a ready-made scare story to get the masses panicking and crying “save us!” just like they did in response to the artificially-created perception of tobacco-smoke “danger.”
What’s most surprising isn’t that the PTB and their minions are using exactly the same template to enable themselves to impose almost identical policies on the general public as they have been imposing on smokers for the last decade – pretty much any smoker could have pointed out 10 years ago that the anti-smokers were, whether intentionally or not, beating a lovely clear path for similarly-minded folks to follow in the future – but rather that so few people have yet noticed the glaring similarities of it all from its start right up to now. Neither, sadly, have they bothered to look at the current situation of smokers and stopped to consider that that’s therefore what’s planned for them too, now, no matter how much they grumble and groan and protest and argue.
To be honest, I’ve got very little sympathy for most people now grumbling about the loss of their “freedoms,” because most of them made their bed 10 years or so ago, by accepting the precedent and principle of all the freedom-killing anti-smoking initiatives, often with unconcealed enthusiasm – now they’ve just got to get used to lying on it, like we have. Tough! Shouldn’t have been so bloody gullible in the first place! The ban wasn’t frequently referred to by those of us on the receiving end as the “smoking ban experiment” for nothing …

Now most of the western population knows how smokers have been persecuted and robbed for decades (the robbery equivalent is huge fines for daring to protest, or failing to wear special clothing, masks, indicating obedience to the evil CV19 god)…
Absolutely true, Mr. Jax. It looks like anti-smoking was a kind of a trial run of brainwashing, toching upon only some people in some countries. I even think these bastards were not taken seriously at first, but then the trial was running on and on, and then the same power – call it the medical lobby – attacked the whole world, using basically the same tactics. Only consolation is, looks like they have overdone it this time. Most people want out of the scary world these bastards have created.

There is one ashtray out in the open next to the diesel generator and garbage bins. I went under the small porch and before I could even light my semi sodden “death stick” the bully in charge remonstrated with me.
What possible harm could I cause with nobody else in sight (rhetorical question).

There was a semi sheltered alcove with seating at the windward lee of the building but the powers that be would rather it not be used at all, than used by reviled smokers. The lodge used to be a training centre for Australian Antarctic Division team leaders, aka penguin hasslers, and a former colleague who completed 4 ANARE https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_National_Antarctic_Research_Expeditions missions said before the large fireplace was enclosed the entire lodge used to fill with thick acrid smoke, setting off the smoke alarms (not of course as much of an existential threat as diluted tobacco smoke outdoors – barking mad). I would have more respect for the biomedical fascists, or is that Faucists, if they were honest enough to admit they are prohibitionist bullies on a monomaniac moral crusade with no connection to “health”, the only social good…nothing else matters…
The nocebo effect is a big problem.
(Opposite of placebo.)
Placebo is a mystery, but so powerful that all clinical trials have to be arranged to prevent it skewing the results.
Nocebo has to be even more effective. (It’s easier to break something than to fix it!)
When a credible-looking scientist or doctor tells a lot of people that they’re going to die (of something harmless), many of them will oblige. This “proves” her right.
I shudder to think how many have been killed by this voodoo.
For “ethical” reasons, it’s impossible to formally research the nocebo effect.
They’re doing it anyway.
But without a control group, who have not been literally frightened to death.
So many die, but nothing true is learned. Only the big lie is reinforced.
Third light, first the sniper sees the light in the dark, then they take aim at the moving flame as the the second soldier lights a cigarette from the same match, if a third cigarette is lit from that match the sniper fires.
Offering yours and lighting other peoples cigarettes used to be the polite thing to do, or perhaps there was a shortage of matches

There was a short story writer called Saki who served in WW1. I think his real name was Monroe. His last words were apparently “Put that bloody cigarette out!” (The sniper must have got him by chance) Proves that smoking does kill, even if it’s other people.

Well spotted and true RdM!! I too noticed that stupid comment, with some regret… the scepticism is selective, proof that the relentless anti smoking “smoking causes every illness known to humanity” meme is hard to dislodge. I got a patronising email from the bullies at Melbourne City Council today validating their bogus consultation on a “smoke free” (no, obviously less free) city. Like two wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for dinner…in that the centre of Danielistan… they only asked the rabid anti smokers, not civil libertarians, and of course never addressed my finely crafted and well researched (not that I am biased) arguments and citations. Not that I would ever go to Melbourne again (except I have to languish in a useless mask, symbol of obedience to the evil CV19 god, for half a day on return to Canberra this Thursday). Tasmania is even worse as I note above, and Launceston, second oldest city, is defaced with NO SMOKING signs, even embedded into the footpath, every few metres. I counted the NO SMOKING signs at the local quite small airport – no less than 74, including on all four sides of the outside terminal building columns. Truly, tobacco healthist paternalism is the template for CV19 “we know best” relentless bullying, which has no place in any jurisdiction claiming to be a democracy (hey let’s go to China, they all smoke like chimneys there, government doesn’t seem to worry, at least it isn’t opium!!!)…

Actually vaccine push made more people to smoke and more nonsmokers not to be afraid of the ones that do. At least where I live.
