Strange Times

It’s all rather surreal.

Tucker Carlson:

WHO director Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: “The Covid-19 pandemic has given new impetus to the need to accelerate efforts to respond to climate change.”

What the hell has Covid-19 got to do with climate change? Nothing, obviously.

They’re all interchangeable. Covid-19. Climate change. Smoking bans. Brexit. Trump. Greta.

Greta Thunberg via RdM:

Infectious diseases expert and University of Edinburgh professor Mark Woolhouse:

“Lockdown was a panic measure and I believe history will say trying to control Covid-19 through lockdown was a monumental mistake on a global scale, the cure was worse than the disease,”

Also Joe L has created a page on the protective effect of smoking against Covid-19. I’ve uploaded this, and will add a link to it in my References section. Further suggestions for it are welcome.

“History will say trying to control Covid-19 through lockdown was a monumental mistake on a global scale” – history cannot say things, it’s not a living being. People have to say it, and I’m tired of waiting for real big people, with global standing, saying this obvious thing out loud, to make history and to shock everyone. As if that everyone does not already know it.
Oh, and I’ve again appropriated, for my next column, Rose’s recent contribution about shizophrenia. That’s becoming a habit. Thank you, Rose. You are beautiful and brilliant.

Pellagra, Schizophrenia and niacin have a lot in common

“The conquest of pellagra is commonly associated with one name: Joseph Goldberger of the US Public Health Service, who in 1914 went south, concluded within 4 months that the cause was inadequate diet, spent the rest of his life researching the disease, and found that brewer’s yeast could prevent and treat it at nominal cost.”
    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4530670/

“Conrad Arnold Elvehjem was internationally known as an American biochemist in nutrition. In 1937 he identified a molecule found in fresh meat and yeast as a new vitamin, nicotinic acid , now called niacin. His discovery led directly to the cure of human pellagra, once a major health problem in the United States.”

“Pellagra defines systemic disease as resulting from a marked cellular deficiency of niacin. It is characterized by 4 “D’s”: diarrhea, dermatitis, dementia, and death.”

“Over 1,000,000 families in the rural South eat nothing but salt pork, corn meal and molasses. Their members are frequent victims of that painful deficiency disease, pellagra, with its attendant diarrhea, dementia, dermatitis. Physicians have known for nearly 25 years that small amounts of green vegetables and milk will forestall the disease. But still pellagra continues. In its advanced stages it has been considered incurable, since the patients are unable to ingest the necessary kinds of food.Last week the Journal of the American Medical Association printed two articles on pellagra showing the startlingly beneficial results of a new treatment.Nicotinic acid,”

“Nicotinic acid, a distant relative (about second cousin once removed) of tobacco’s nicotine, is found in yeast, wheat germ and liver. When considerable quantities were fed to some 300 patients with pellagra, their sores healed, their cramps disappeared.
Even patients who were violently insane dramatically regained their wits within 48 hours”

    Nicotinic acid – 1941 (p.2)
“We find that the smoke from ordinary Ripple cigarettes contains the anti-pellagra vitamin or nicotinic acid in fairly substantial amounts. However, the quantity is probably too low for a man to rely upon this source alone for his nicotinic acid requirement. At least to do so he would find it necessary to smoke an unreasonable number”
“You will recall that in our letter of March 11th we doubted that vitamins could be absorbed from tobacco smoke by the throat and lung tissues. However, we have now found that nicotinic acid is dissolved in the saliva of the smoker when smoking ordinary cigarettes, and even in greater amounts when smoking cigarettes made from the enriched tobacco. Thus, the vitamin does not have to be absorbed thru the lungs, but will be swallowed in the approved manner. These conclusions are based on actual analysis of saliva, collected from a smoker while smoking.
In other words, we analyzed the saliva, which would have otherwise been swallowed. No Nicotinic Acid occurred in the smoker’s saliva before smoking. We feel that we have made this report sufficiently long to cover the discoveries, which we regard as quite remarkable”

Dr Elvehjem analyzed samples prepared by Parmele by the microbiological assay method of Snell and Wright. The mirobiological method was more specific than the chemical method employed by Parmele.
Lower levels of nicotinic acid were found, but Parmele’s essential findings were confirmed”

Great to see Tucker Carlson (once again) being the only true journalist left in the mainstream media. I became a fan of his after the Las Vegas massacre in October 2017. The rest of the media abruptly stopped talking about it after a few weeks, even though the case was still open and there were no answers (there still aren’t any–the FBI closed the case in January 2019 with the official conclusion of “no motive”), but Carlson continued asking questions on his show for months. We need more journalists like Tucker Carlson. However, I fear he is the last of a dying breed.

Benefits of inhaled nitric oxide therapy for pregnant patients with COVID-19
    Massachusetts General Hospital
    26 Aug 2020

BOSTON – Inhaled nitric oxide (NO) can be a valuable adjunct respiratory therapy for pregnant women with severe and critical COVID-19, a team of researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) has found. The delivery of the therapeutic gas to six COVID-19 pregnant patients admitted to MGH, as described in a paper in Obstetrics & Gynecology, resulted in a rapid and sustained improvement in cardiopulmonary function and decreased inflammation. The resolution of viral infection within 22 days was observed in five of the six patients, findings that could have important implications for treating viruses like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

“We noted rapid relief from breathlessness in these patients, with lower respiratory rate and better oxygenation after mask administration of high concentration nitric oxide, with no adverse side effects,” says Lorenzo Berra, MD, investigator in the Department of Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at MGH, and the corresponding author of the study. “In addition, inflammatory markers showed a rapid decrease after breathing nitric oxide and five of the six patients in our study showed viral clearance from nasopharyngeal swabs by 22 days after COVID-19 diagnosis. All patients were discharged in stable condition from the hospital. We found these results to be very encouraging.”
    https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2020-08/mgh-boi082420.php

Which includes an interesting bit about previous use in SARS

“Berra, who is also an associate professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School cited a group of clinicians in China who, during the 2003-2004 SARS outbreak, administered inhaled NO to infected patients and reported that their chest x-ray findings cleared rapidly (Chen et al. Clin Infect Dis. 2004;39(10):1531-5). “Because of the genetic similarities between Coronavirus SARS-CoV-1 (SARS) and CoV-2 (COVID-19), we decided to use high-dose nitric oxide to prevent viral replication,” Berra explains. What the physicians learned was that five of the six patients in their cohort who received inhaled NO but no other antiviral medication while in the hospital were clear of the virus, as shown by two negative nasopharyngeal swabs obtained after 9 to 22 days from treatment initiation.”

“Each treatment was started within 48 hours of admission at a high but still safe dosage of 160 to 200 parts per million (ppm) of inhaled NO for 30 to 60 minutes twice-a-day.”

which can be compared to the suggested dosage in –

Nitric oxide dosed in short bursts at high concentrations may protect against Covid 19

“Mainstream smoke from cigarettes contains NO at peak concentrations of between about 250 ppm and 1350 ppm in each puff”

    Covid is not over.

    • Rose says:

      Covid isn’t over.
Brigitte are you alright? You don’t sound like yourself.

    • Joe L. says:

Brigitte, it appears you have provided a list of “confirmed” COVID-19 cases by date, which seems to show a roughly exponential increase occurring. With no context, these numbers (much like the WHO’s and CDC’s claims that “smoking causes more than 7 million deaths worldwide per year”) sound frightening. Assuming this data is accurate, all that can be deduced from this is that SARS-CoV-2 has an R0 greater than 1, which is true for many viruses.

There are two very important points you must bear in mind:

1.) The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests which are used to determine this data are extremely inaccurate, and even the inventor of the method claimed that it was never intended to be used for diagnostic purposes (please see my comment here).

      2. Far more important in determining the severity of this virus than number of confirmed cases is the number of deaths directly attributable to SARS-CoV-2. While this number is even less reliable than the number of confirmed cases (bear in mind that many countries are not distinguishing between deaths occurring after a positive COVID-19 test result and deaths directly due to COVID-19 in their official records), this number has not been increasing exponentially, but rather linearly.

The most important statistic of all is the infection-fatality ratio (IFR). However, due to both inaccurate infection numbers and inaccurate death numbers, it is impossible to calculate IFR accurately. Yet, even using the official “scary” data, and taking into account that the CDC recently stated they believe the actual number of cases is 6 to 24 times higher than the “official” recorded number of confirmed cases, we can estimate that the IFR is currently, at the high end, (842,000 / (25,000,000 * 6)). = 0.56%, and at the low end, (842,000 / (25,000,000 * 24)). = 0.14%. To put this into perspective, influenza has an average IFR of approximately 0.1% and the Spanish Flu had an estimated IFR of 2.5%.

  14. DP says:

    Dear Mr Davis

On the Worldometer site via the link provided by Beobrigitte a clearer picture of what is happening can be gained by clicking on the ‘7 day moving average’ for cases and deaths. These show that cases peaked worldwide in the second week in August, while deaths have a double peak, not reflected in cases (as one might expect), but certainly influenced by the fact that the southern hemisphere would normally be about 6 months behind the northern hemisphere (actually 4 months because corona started about 2 months late in the northern hemisphere), since influenza like illnesses are pretty seasonal – the tropics mostly have a year-round ‘flu season, which tends to track wet and dry seasons where applicable, though not necessarily very strongly.

I treat ‘corona deaths’ with a bit of scepticism, since there seems to be a huge range of definitions, which even our own dear, soon to be late and unlamented, Public Health England seem to have failed to grasp properly.

Similarly corona cases are suspect since they depend entirely on testing which may be a) imperfect and b) not comprehensive. Studies have shown™ that there is evidence that far more people have had corona without showing symptoms

I have been tracking UK corona cases and deaths using Worldometer data (mainly for old times’ sake) and the ONS all-cause weekly deaths statistics (England and Wales only – cannot find UK figures). The other day I thought I’d try to reconcile both sets for corona deaths – waste of time. Worldometer was showing 7 day moving average of around 10 per day, ONS figures for E & W averaging 20 per day. Which is right? For deaths from corona, probably neither, since almost all people who die are old with multiple co-morbidities, and the same applies to the much fewer younger victims.

The only figures worth considering are all-cause deaths, since there are only two options: dead or alive. Hopefully neither PHE nor ONS can get that wrong.
