Greta Thunberg Wants You To Panic

So now Greta Thunberg becomes a saint? What’s going on here?

Greta Thunberg was born on 3 January 2003 in Sweden. Her mother, Malena Ernman, is a Swedish opera singer, her father is actor Svante Thunberg, and her grandfather is actor and director Olof Thunberg.

Thunberg says she first heard about climate change in 2011, when she was 8 years old, and could not understand why so little was being done about it. Three years later she became depressed and lethargic, stopped talking and eating, and was eventually diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), and selective mutism. While acknowledging that her diagnosis “has limited me before”, she does not view her autism as an illness and has instead called it her “superpower”.

For about two years, Thunberg challenged her parents to lower the family’s carbon footprint by becoming vegan and giving up flying, which in part meant her mother had to give up her international career as an opera singer.

She’s a casualty. She’s a kid who’s been scared out of her wits by her teachers and the mass media. And has also been manipulated by climate activists:

…she was contacted by Bo Thorén from Fossil Free Dalsland, a group interested in doing something about climate change. Thunberg attended a few of their meetings, and at one of them, Thoren also suggested that school children could strike for climate change. Thunberg tried to persuade other young people to get involved but “no one was really interested” so eventually, she decided to go ahead with the strike by herself.

So it seems her Stockholm school chums didn’t share her concerns. She’s on her own.

Perhaps the fact that she comes from a show business family has something to do with it. She’s become a child star – a modern Shirley Temple – with their considerable assistance, it would seem. She’s now far more famous than any of them, and far more in demand. She’s probably become a goldmine. And she’ll remain a goldmine as long as she can remain in the public eye.

And what better way to do that than sail across the Atlantic?

Greta Thunberg arrived in New York on Wednesday, stepping on to dry land after crossing the Atlantic in a sailboat with a passionate message to tackle global heating.

Crowds had gathered to welcome her for hours beforehand, ready to welcome Thunberg’s arrival on the yacht which is designed to achieve zero-carbon status: propelled by wind, it uses solar panels and water-driven generators for its electricity…

She was offered a ride on the Malizia II racing yacht skippered by Pierre Casiraghi, the son of Princess Caroline of Monaco, and the German round-the-world sailor Boris Herrmann.

And she did it in just 2 weeks. It used to take a lot longer:

Journey to America. In the early 19th century sailing ships took about six weeks to cross the Atlantic. With adverse winds or bad weather the journey could take as long as fourteen weeks. When this happened passengers would often run short of provisions.

What was Greta eating while on this racing yacht?

During the trip, Thunberg and Boris Herrmann communicated with the world outside using social media.

Somehow or other, I suspect Greta didn’t really sail across the Atlantic. It was a far too dangerous thing to do. And she had become too valuable. What if she’d been swept overboard? Or taken ill? Or shipwrecked?

The whole thing was probably just show business. She probably no more really sailed across the Atlantic than Humphrey Bogart really sailed to Casablanca. She got on the boat in Plymouth on 14 August, and got off in New York on 28 August, and in between who knows where she was.

Questions will also be raised as to why Thunberg needs to be at these conferences in person. The internet has done as much to break down our sense of borders as commercial flights did before it. Thunberg doesn’t need to attend conferences to disseminate her views to the world; she can simply upload a video to YouTube from her own living room. But for many climate change activists, it is the appeal of being seen to do good, and to mingle with others of a similar mindset that drives their attendance at these events.

And what’s her message to the world?

“Adults keep saying we owe it to the young people to give them hope. But I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful; I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act, I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house was on fire, because it is.” (my added emphasis)

She’s a casualty, and she’s being used by unscrupulous people to create a lot more casualties.

The house isn’t on fire. It’s not a real fire. It’s a show business fire, a completely imaginary fire.
