Alex Jones, the American conspiracy theorist who runs the InfoWars website, has been suspended from Facebook for bullying and hate speech.
The suspension will last for 30 days, and affects only Jones’s personal account on the social network, not the main InfoWars account. His profile will continue to be published, but he will not be not be able to post content until the suspension elapses.
A Facebook spokesperson told the Guardian Jones was found to have violated its community standards.
“Our community standards make it clear that we prohibit content that encourages physical harm [bullying], or attacks someone based on their religious affiliation or gender identity [hate speech],” the spokesperson said.
I’ve been watching Alex Jones for some years now, and I’ve never seen him doing any bullying or using any hate speech. I think I’d be able to recognise them if I saw them.
Alex Jones is a bit over the top. There seems to be a perpetual emergency at Infowars. And I suppose that this is the latest one.
Alex Jones is a 9/11 conspiracy theorist. And a Sandy Hook conspiracy theorist. By “conspiracy theorist” I simply mean that he’s saying that what happened with those things was not as was reported at the time. And maybe it wasn’t. But as far as I can see, these days everything gets misreported.
The problem with Alex Jones is that he doesn’t report the same thing as the mainstream media reports. He’s off message all the time. And that’s why they want to shut him down. And shut down anybody else who says anything off message. We’re all supposed to receive exactly the same message from everywhere, all the time.
But that’s how things used to be, before the internet. Back then there were 2 or 3 mainstream media channels that controlled the news that everyone got. And they could decide among themselves what was news and what wasn’t. But once people like Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage and Alex Jones started their own personal channels, and started reporting differently, the MSM no longer had complete control of the message that everyone got. So now they’re trying to get them banned. They’re trying to regain the control that they lost
This little blog of mine is another, very minor example of the same thing. I write about smoking bans that the MSM never mention, even as people are being banned from smoking on the streets or in their own homes. And that’s off message too. Not even Alex Jones or Michael Savage are as off message as I am about that. None of them call for the complete destruction of Tobacco Control like I do. So some people probably want me banned too. And, who knows, maybe I will be.
The problem at the moment seems to be that outfits like Google and Facebook and YouTube and Twitter were all started by, and staffed with, progressive ‘liberal’ types. And they don’t want ‘conservatives’ (i.e. anyone who disagrees with them) to have a voice. They can (and do) say that these conservatives engage in “hate speech”. Anything that isn’t politically correct is automatically dubbed “hate speech”.
So what’s to stop conservatives starting their own versions of Google and Facebook and YouTube and Twitter? Or ousting the progressive ‘liberal’ types who run them? Nothing. And maybe that’s what’s happening.
It’s an internecine media war. And one that the progressive ‘liberal’ mainstream media seem to be gradually losing. Or we’re going to end up with progressive ‘liberal’ media side by side with conservative media, each broadcasting completely different news and opinion.
Anyway, here’s Alex Jones on YouTube yesterday. Not sure why it hasn’t been banned.
It’s the least I can do.
