The Hysteria Continues

The hysteria continues. Look! Someone smoking on a train!

Shocking moment man lights a cigarette and smokes it on a Sydney train

Man caught on camera puffing away on a cigarette on a Sydney train

He can be seen smoking while his train waits at a platoform

Smoking is prohibited on trains and covered stations in NSW

Smokers caught lighting up can face a maximum fine of $550

Elsewhere, courthouse evacuated. Oh dear! Somebody smoking in a bathroom!

Smoker causes evacuation, Nueces County Courthouse officials say

A man smoking in a Nueces County courthouse bathroom caused an evacuation early Tuesday morning, court officials said.

Hundreds of people including jurors, lawyers and court staff were asked to leave the Nueces County Courthouse about 8:10 a.m. after smoke was seen coming from a men’s bathroom on the 9th floor.

Several fire engines and ambulances responded, blocking part of Lipan Street. Everyone was back in the courthouse by about 20 minutes later, fire officials said.

It’s so utterly pathetic and laughable.

Aside from that:

British political leader Nigel Farage said Wednesday he will appear alongside Donald Trump at a Wednesday night Mississippi rally.

It really is fast time to put a stop to the hysteria surrounding smoking. Years of propaganda making false and exaggerated claims has caused an irrational response to smoking. This blog is a welcome relief to that insanity. Efforts to disabuse the propaganda ad return balance are essential and must be encouraged.

In America’s prisons, ramen more precious than cigarettes, study says

So long, tobacco: There’s a new most-prized currency in America’s prisons, at least according to a University of Arizona Ph.D. candidate in sociology: ramen.

Michael Gibson-Light’s new study is the culmination of a year’s worth of interviews with about 60 inmates at an unnamed “male state prison in the US Sunbelt,” per a press release. The upshot: Where cigarettes were once king, “soup is money in here,” as one convict says.

But the reason behind the shift is essentially hunger. Gibson-Light explains that in the early 2000s, a new vendor began supplying the food to the prison he studied in a bid to cut costs. He was told the price per meal was slashed from $2 to $1.25 as a result—and both quality and quantity took a hit. Specifically, three hot meals a day were no more.

Weekday lunches are now cold, and on the weekends only two meals are served; all portion sizes were shrunk. With inmates working and exercising throughout the day, calories — and edible ones at that — became precious.

The Guardian reports an ominous anecdote from Gibson-Light: Corrections officers suggested he not eat the prison food, so as to avoid any potential food poisoning.

The most popular forms of currency don’t change “unless there’s some drastic change to the value in people using it,” says Gibson-Light, which signals to him how much food services has degraded.

In terms of value, at the prison studied, ramen cost 59 cents a pack but was worth a lot more. One telling example: Five hand-rolled cigarettes, worth $2, can be bought for just one package of ramen.

It would appear Michelle Obamas public school anti fat food program hit the prisons too!

The entire Nueces County Courthouse was evacuated due to a bomb scare before lunchtime Monday. Everyone was allowed back in at 1:05 p.m.

Sheriff Jim Kaelin says an item that looks like an aluminum cake pan taped shut with dead flowers inside was left in the 13th Court of Criminal Appeals courtroom. A bomb sniffing dog checked out the item and had a “heavy alert” which lead to the evacuation.

The bomb squad found it was just a cake inside, but were concerned as it was wrapped like a bomb. Sheriff Kaelin says the woman who dropped off the item claimed she had a gun and was going to hurt someone, but she ran off. That woman is now in custody.

Hysteria over nothing is just a vile scare tactic.

Antis claim that there are hundreds of ‘toxic’ dangerous chemicals in cigarettes and cigarette smoke.
Just as with food and drugs, the FDA has the power to regulate cigarettes and make whatever is in them illegal.

But, the FDA has made no ruling on any such chemicals.

Therefore, none of those ‘toxic’ chemicals are present in quantities large enough to be harmful!!!!
Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act

The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (also known as the FSPTC Act) was signed into law by President Barack Obama on June 22, 2009.

This bill changed the scope of tobacco policy in the United States by giving the FDA the ability to regulate tobacco products, similar to how it has regulated food and pharmaceuticals since the passing of the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906.

I just happened to look up “Authoritarian vs Libertarian” on Wikipedia just now, in order to explain to someone that, broadly speaking, Trump was the former but Farage the latter. Wikipedia’s entry includes a chart purporting to show the positions of all UK political parties as of the 2015 general election.

It shows UKIP up in the top right corner as both very authoritarian and very right wing. I’m not too fussed about the right wing left wing issue as I don’t think it is particularly useful at at present. What is odd and very wrong is the Authoritarian label.

I realise that it is not pure Libertarian though many members would like it to be and that there are numerous people with a more authoritarian view. Nonetheless I have always believed that the party was committed to individual liberty and small government. Far more so than any other UK party. This is very much more Libertarian than Authoritarian.

Even more bizarrely, the extremely Authoritarian ‘Green’ party is actually labelled as highly Libertarian.

Looks to me like someone is trying to alter the meaning of the words. As happened with ‘Liberal’.

    • Some French bloke says:

Smaller government represents no particular threat for big business, and you can commit the peoples of the world to become more nation-bound than they’ve ever been all you want, global corporations will nevertheless continue to rule the day, and thrive on a global scale, so what’s the point in banging on about elections, right or left? They just act as a bone to chew on for the masses.

How on earth has the tobacco bugaboo shaggy-dog story been allowed to take on such monstrous proportions, despite the grossly anti-scientific nature of the basic claims? Partly because so-called Big Tobacco, far from being he invincible Biggy the MSM conveniently depict, is in fact subservient to a far bigger concern, and partly because brilliant scientific minds are not necessarily very sharp when it comes to politics, even if people of R. A. Fisher’s caliber may prove unbeatable when applying multi-dimentional geometry to mathematical models. Though what really clinched the deal, or allowed the other parties to clinch it so smoothly, is the average smoker’s usual apathy.

United States presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has lashed out at UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage during a speech at a rally today. Mr. Farage has told Breitbart London her comments are “extraordinary” and suggested she spend more time speaking to working people in her country than attacking him.

Mrs. Clinton has ranted about the outgoing UKIP leader who appeared at a rally for her political rival for the presidency Donald Trump. Clinton slammed Trump for having Farage appear on stage to talk about the Brexit vote and even went as far as to suggest the former UKIP leader of being in bed with Russian president Vladimir Putin because he had appeared on Russian television broadcasts.

“Just yesterday, one of Britain’s most prominent right-wing leaders, a man named Nigel Farage, who stoked anti-immigrant sentiments to win the referendum to have Britain leave the European Union, campaigned with Donald Trump in Mississippi,” Clinton said.

“Farage has called for a ban on the children of legal immigrants from public schools and health services, has said women are quote “worth less” than men, and supports scrapping laws that prevent employers from discriminating based on race — that’s who Trump wants by his side. The godfather of this global brand of extreme nationalism is Russian President Vladimir Putin. ”
