If I write about anything smoking-related, it’ll usually be about entirely unjustified and socially and economically and politically destructive smoking bans. Go to a heroin clinic and have a look in the padded cells on about day 2 of withdrawels………….Smoking IS SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE and always has been otherwise it wouldn’t have stayed around for 600 years. I started back smoking 3 days after I got out of the hospital from a so called blockage caused by a pharma drug called BIAXIN. I got 2 stents 1 which I likely didn’t even need as the doc said it was nothing. Guess what I had NO PLAQUE BUILDUP AT ALL on the side where the clot was. the others side was less than 20%…………
Yet now they want me to take statin drugs which destroy muscle tissue damage brain cells and a 100 other problems in your body. I took em for 3 months and every day I had flu like symptons so bad I couldn’t even crawl out of bed. Finally it took 4 phone calls over a month to get the damn doctor to admit it was the statins doing it to me from adverse side effects and to stop them for a week and see if everything cleared up. It did and within 2 days the nausea and dizziness and foogy brain went away followed by 3 weeks later the muscle pains going away. 5 weeks off them and simply watching my diet my count was 110. That’s perfect for anyone but a Nazified pharma doc who want a 45-65 level. You need at least 100 cholesterol count just for your body to function right.
Needless to say I told the doc to shove his shit,I still take the Plavix but it doesn’t tear you up like those poisonous statins do.

Historically, tobacco use was primarily recreational and has been smoked in cigarettes, cigars and pipes, as well as smokeless forms of consumption, all of which are associated with adverse health effects. However, recent scientific investigations indicate that tobacco also contains several diverse secondary metabolites that may provide potential health benefits in the treatment of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Tobacco alpha- and beta-2,7,11-cembratriene-4,6-diols display potent anticancer activity. Funny the same year he told thecAtlantic city council any smoking bans in casinos would destroy the business and profits of Atlantic City itself. Today he is proven correct all the 9 casinos are gone.
Smoking lounges would non create a real change, as I’m sure smokers will be inconsiderate and walk thoughout the casinos with their lit cigarettes on their way to the smoking lounges, especially oriental customers who have no regard for the law. If you don’t believe me look in the coin trays in the “non smoking areas” and look at all the cigarettes put out in them. Look in the elevators and look on the floor at the cigarettes put out on the rugs. Management is not going to chase away a paying guess so there is only lose enforcement. When I asked a slot attendant at Trump Taj Mahal to tell a customer to stop smoking in the non smoking section, she reponded, ” they don’t pay me enough money to ask them to stop smoking”. Isn’t it funny how smokers comply 100% in restaurants and work places but in NJ casinos they don’t take it serious.

Trump got out of AC when the bans came down after they wouldn’t listen to him that smoking bans would destroy AC altogether.
I just read dpwntown AC is now boarded up empty and not much left,pretty much the same way Downtown Lexington ky looks to after their ban went into effect.
Trump was strongly against the smoking ban in Atlantic City, very strongly. He can very very strongly anti-smoking ban if he thinks it will ruin economies, including his own businesses which were affected badly by that ban.
That is because the bottom line for Trump is money … and nothing else.

ok i am a smoker. i really enjoy smoking and gambling together. it just kind of goes ahnd in hand to me. i think if ac stops smoking period it will be the downfall. i understand second hand smoke, and choices, etc. lets face it many people do smoke and many do not. you get rid of smoking and you get rid of many gamblers that will go to the other casinos (indian) and smoke all they want.
then you will se ac start to slump in profits which in count will reduce employees, service, etc. etc. etc.
i for one would never return to ac when i have other choices where i can smoke.
on another note i totally agree with non smokers. there should be areas for that clientele also, nice supported areas that follow the rules. on occassion i am sure someone would come in smoking and it should nicely be said sorry this is a no smoking room or area and that is that.
in canada in niagara falls before they banned smoking (and lost some profits due to it) they use to have 2 floors, a smoking floor and non smoking floor. both equally nice with the same games tables etc. it was for sure the smoking floor was always more crowded, but in any event i thought that was an awsome idea.
for some of the nasty people who just flip out over smoking, give it some slack. be leary of the self rightous!! i don’t drink and take offense to drunks who do the nastiest or stupiest things, or who risk the safety of others. I dont see a ban on that, I think that can be more dangerous than second hand smoke!
They need a happy medium for everyone, and non smokers you need to support an are for us as we should you, for the well being of ac’s future and letting american citizens make their own choices

2) Trump and the American news media.
There are TV programs where pundits discuss current events. There are radio talk shows, newspaper columnists and bloggers. These people have a time slot or word count to fill day after day. They have to keep their audience engaged.

In High School, there was always a class clown – someone who would do anything for attention. Except that he’s older and richer, The Donald is the class clown.
Going back at least 40 years, Trump has sought media attention – and he always got a lot. Put him on camera, and he’s off at warp speed, commenting on anything and everything. The Donald LOVES the camera. As class clown, he NEEDS the camera.
THE CAMERA ALSO NEEDS THE DONALD. Like pigs at a trough, the news media feeds on him. What will your guests discuss on your TV or radio show? Can’t think of anything to write for your column or blog? Trump to the rescue! Do you even have time to cover all his comments?
Before Trump, Rand Paul was the media darling. Rand Paul said this, Rand Paul said that. Lots of talk, pro and con. Rand Paul vs Hillary Clinton. Lots more talk. Today the talk is about when Paul will drop out of the Presidential race. (The media has moved on to the next big thing – someone more outrageous than Rand Paul – Donald Trump.)
The media is slanted left or right. The left will damn Trump, and the right praise him. Either way, they’re filling air time. They’re also catering to what their audience wants to hear.
Since whatever Trump says is probably shocking (i.e., “newsworthy”), whatever other candidates say (like addressing dull matters of policy) gets little attention.
All this free news exposure means that Trump doesn’t have to spend much money on advertising. (I did say he’s smart.)

3) On polls.
The election is a year away. Except for tea leaf reading pundits (and their audience), at this time, national polls are worthless. Stated above, a year ago, it was Rand Paul vs Hillary Clinton.
Polls in early primary states may be of interest but these can be misleading. People who vote in Republican primaries are among the most conservative in the nation. They are a small minority in a large country.
There is also the issue of name recognition. Given a choice between Donald Trump and George Pataki, who would you pick? Other than Walt or another New Yorker, hat tip to anyone who even knows who Pataki is. He was a three term (12 year) governor of New York State. I’ve forgotten more about him than any sane person would want to know.

4) How did Trump make his money? He didn’t – his grandfather did. With all his worldly positions packed in a suitcase, Frederick Drumpf immigrated from Germany to New York in 1885. He became a naturalized U. S. citizen in 1892. Frederick had a talent for business, and he became quite wealthy. (I don’t know how much.) Frederick’s son Fred built on that and was a multi-millionaire, very big in New York City real estate. (Brooklyn and Queens, but not Manhattan.)
Donald was educated at elite schools, and I’m sure he never lacked for anything money could buy. After college, he went to work for, and eventually inherited (along with other siblings), the family business. What was Trump net worth when he “burst” upon the NY real estate scene in the late 1970’s? I’ve heard numbers between 40 and 200 million dollars. I don’t know, and I don’t know what either amount would be in 2015 dollars, but it would certainly be a princely sum.

5) Is / was Trump “political”? No and very. In terms of running for elected office, except recently, no. In terms of using money to influence elected officials, hell yes! Donald’s father made many large “campaign contributions” to people running for political office. He was on friendly terms with the Mayor of New York City and the Governor of New York State, not to mention lesser officials like the NYC Council (which writes the laws that govern the city.) The senior trump gave money to winners and losers. (There is always the next election to consider.) Donald carried on the family tradition. As far as I can determine this was to advance business interests, and if you have 40 million dollars, and give a few thousand here, and a few thousand there, the Mayor of New York City and the Governor of New York State will return your phone calls.
Trump is political in the worst sense of the word – for his own personal gain he uses money to court the favor of elected officials. (And he’s been quite successful.)
6) I have a personal financial interest in one of Trump’s first NYC building projects. So do many other city property owners.
There was a dilapidate old hotel next to Grand Central Station. Trump bought it, tore it down, and built the Grand Hyatt – 1,300 rooms and 60 thousand square feet of meeting / banquet space. Prime Midtown Manhattan real estate, a huge building. I don’t know what it’s worth, but the real estate taxes should be enormous – except that there are no taxes. Trump got the city to wave them for 40 years.
Bravo Donald? The art of the deal. Tough negotiating with the city! Maybe – but….
I own a two family house. Real estate tax is my largest yearly expense. (More than federal, state and city income tax combined.) No 40 year abatements for me! Because Trump pays less (or really nothing), I and many other NYC property owners pay more. So why do I dislike The Donald….?
7) In “partnership with local governments and sometimes other investors, Trump has used eminent domain to force homeowners and small businesses to sell him their properties so he could have the land to build one of his casinos, hotels, or other endeavors. (The idea of eminent domain is to use this power for the “common good;” e.g. a highway to benefit all citizens. It has become a tool of tycoons to build luxury apartments and hotels that that only the wealthy can afford.)

8) What is Trump’s net worth? American financial new media have been asking this for as long as The Donald has boasted of his wealth. All are skeptical, but none really know.
Trump says that he has increased the worth of the business he inherited. That’s probably true. However, over many decades, would the business have grown even larger under someone else’s leadership? (Would Trump have made more money just by investing in the stock market?) There’s no way to know. At least four of Trump’s businesses (including casinos in Atlantic City) have filed for bankruptcy. (Google this.)
“Public” corporations traded on a stock exchange must offer the public a good deal of financial data. “Private” business (owned by one or more people) can keep much of this information private. I think all of Trump’s businesses are private. Some of his “deals” may require some public disclosure, but otherwise (except to the IRS and state and local taxing authorities) he isn’t legally required to release financial information.
If you see the Trump name on a building (say a hotel), does Trump actually own the property? There are three cases. A) yes, he owns and runs it. (Item A could be divided – sometimes Trump alone owns the building, but sometimes he partners with other investors.) B) another corporation owns the building, but Trump has a management company that hires staff and runs day to day operations. C) Trump neither owns nor operates the hotel, but collects a fee for using his name.
Trump structures each property or business as a single corporation. (I’ve heard that he has 500.) Given all the companies, and all the ownership possibilities, nobody can get all the information required to determine what Trump is really worth.

9) Trump has his name on a truly astonishing number of products. (I think many of these are partnerships with other businesses.) There’s Trump Vodka, Trump Steaks, Trump Chocolate, Trump Bottled Water, Trump Restaurants, and (I think) Trump Soap for his hotels. Trump also has a line of “menswear” (shirts, ties, watches, and whatnot) plus at least two “fragrances” – SUCCESS by Donald Trump “The scents include blends of fresh juniper and iced red currant, hints of coriander, a mix of frozen ginger, fresh bamboo leaves and geranium, a combination of rich vetiver, tonka bean, birchwood and musk. The line of products include two body sprays, a deodorant stick, and aftershave splash.” (Just what I need!)
There’s also Trump Books, Trump Model Management, Trump Home Furnishings, and God only knows what else. (And God only knows if these products are still sold.)

From rags to riches and back to rags. AC is all of the above but mostly its all rags and crackheads again……just like it was back in the 1970s when I was in submarine school and visiting my uncle who had the first collections contract with the first AC casino RESORTS INTERNATIONAL.
That’s how my uncle got so rich and eventually by 1998 he saw what was happening in AC and sold his business and moved to Palm Beach fl. with his race horses and a new collection agency he had purchased there.
High taxation,low rent property,a population of drug addicts and theft so open everywhere it was Detroit on steroids. Nothing changed,even the bus station from the 1930s hadn’t been kept up and the cops did hourly walk thrus in the bathrooms for loiterers asleep in the toilets.
I know I was a sailor in uniform waiting on the bus several times there on my visits…….Nothing ever changed the casino area became a magnet for tourism just don’t go off the beaten path or your dead meat.

They taxed em to death as chris Christie trying to save his precious backing of the statewide NJ smoking ban tried by giving revel 250 million in tax breaks as long as they could make it and stay smokefree showed…………NJ has been a shithole for at least since 1970. We lived there from 1963-65 in toms iver and pt pleasant then tuckerton.
At least back then NJ was free.

I’m still not sure what to make of Trump but what about Ted Cruz? At least he has a good grasp of the Global Warming scam, which has to be a good sign.
Cruz doesn’t have image or name recognition like trump has after a lifetime in the media.

I was ways for Ted Cruz, though I am concerned that his wife in an interview a number of years back said “cancer” was one of her main concerns when asked about where government policy should be heading. (For what that’s worth, given that is also widely widely known he and the Mrs. are not exactly political twins). Also, a video of Cruz heading a subcommittee hearing on “Cures” which invited the usual suspects (from UCSF, etc.) to speak was pretty freaky. The bill in question seem to have been tabled (thankfully, so far) but could never discern his real opinion on the subject (of smoking or any government personal health interference). In short, though my choice has been made, I am always waiting for the other shoe to drop, and expect no less than that it will. If Cruz keeps down some growth, some spending in this area on the federal level, that’s about all any of us can really “hope” for. As for Donald Trump, well at least I like the usual honest style in which he expresses his opinion. At least we know.
I don’t know what Cruz’s views on smoking are, but I seem to remember that when he got Secret Service protection his codename was “Cohiba”. i.e. a cigar.
