  2. Coca-Cola Bottles May Require Cancer Warning Label

Back in January, the state of California added to its list of cancer-causing chemicals an ingredient commonly used in flavored soda beverages, which has sent major shockwaves throughout the processed food industry.

    Good one, Frank.

That’s just about right, Frank, except our local weather forecaster becomes most animated if he can inform you of severe weather conditions, plunging temperatures and a heavy frost in May.
Gardeners Beware, many a time he’s had me racing into the garden late at night covering things up and bringing muddy plants in pots back into the house and NOTHING HAPPENS.

Today in the BBC’s clear mission to reduce the nation to a bunch of trembling hypochondriacs, we have been regaled every ten minutes with the news that –

‘Half of UK people’ will get cancer
    4 February 2015

“One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives, analysis suggests.
Cancer Research UK said this estimate, using a new calculation method, replaced a forecast of more than one in three people developing the disease.”
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-31096218

    You are all doomed.

“But it was not inevitable and improving lifestyle, such as losing weight and quitting smoking, could have a major impact, the charity added.”

So how come, many people having religiously followed your various pronouncements over the years, things are apparently getting so much worse?

    • Rose says:

The BBC took us for a tour round the chemotherapy chairs and the Daily Mail helpfully gave us the survival rates.

Now one in two will get cancer… and it could hit two-thirds of today’s children

      YOUR CHANCE OF SURVIVAL

BREAST CANCER: 96 per cent of women survive for at least one year, 87 per cent do so for five years, and 78 per cent for a decade.

SKIN CANCER: 88 per cent of men survive for five years or more. For women the figures are even better, with 92 per cent predicted to survive for at least five years.

LUNG CANCER: Just 8 per cent of men survive for five years or more, compared with 12 per cent of women.

PROSTATE CANCER: Some 85 per cent of patients survive for five years or more.

BOWEL CANCER: 59 per cent of men survive for five years or more. For women, the figure is 58 per cent.
      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2938753/Now-one-two-cancer-hit-two-thirds-today-s-children.html

On further investigation it could possibly be that this onslaught is because today is apparently World Cancer Day and everyone quietly going about their own business should be given a nasty fright.

Frank, this is about uploading PDF files to your blog.

I’m pretty sure you can, but mostly you shouldn’t have to.

All documents in the Legacy Library have links, just like the links commenters normally provide in response to your posts. Click the link and you move to the Legacy server where you have an option to open the file as a PDF document. Other than an extra mouse click there’s no problem accessing the text (and many sites just automatically open the PDF file). I’ve posted (and read) comments with such links, and they work. You don’t have to upload the PDF to your blog. There’s no need to store it on the internet – it’s already stored.

I’m not sure about the right side bar. However….

Create a blog post called “Historical Documents On Smoking.” (Or a better title.)

Create a right sidebar icon that links to (opens) the above post.

All you need in the blog post is a list of links and for each item a few sentences about why people should read that particular document.

If I understand blogs, as an author you can change a post as many times as you like. Great! Start out with 10 historical documents. Add another 10 next week, and 10 more whenever you’re in the mood. The initial post would grow longer and longer as you add more links. Like people offering you candidates for the Graveyard, they could offer historical papers and you could add them or not, depending on your evaluation of the text.

One issue I see is that there are thousands of documents that challenge the “smoking causes” theory. You’d need some organization – animal studies, statistical problems, the black lung stuff, etc., etc. That I’m sure you can do.

Is there a limit to links in a single post? I don’t know, but if there is, you could create multiple posts that stay within the limit.

Bottom line, if you are willing to do the work I’m pretty sure you could create a robust list of historical documents. If you want to, I have lots of papers to suggest.

P.S.: I’m also sure you can incorporate a PDF link directly into any blog post. A few years ago you were nice enough to let me do a guest post, and the text was in the form of a PDF file. If you can do it once, you can do it again. But I don’t think you have to.

Thanks for that. I do indeed appear to have uploaded a pdf file to WordPress (unless it was my old blog).

Jltrader sent me a bunch of pdf files yesterday. I haven’t had time to look at them all yet, but they seem interesting. He suggested Dropbox as a place to put them. I think Google offers storage space as well.

I’ve been thinking that one day soon I’ll start a reference page. WordPress might offer such a facility. There are features of WordPress that I’ve never explored.

      • nisakiman says:

It’s an excellent idea, and if and when you have the time and the inclination, would be a worthwhile addition. I often find myself going back through your posts to try to find something (usually a link) someone has put in the comments; very often in vain. I bookmark a lot, but my bookmarks are starting to become somewhat unwieldy (yes, I need to sub-divide and sub-sub-divide them when I have time). A succinct reference page here would be very useful.

    • Frank Davis says:

I think what I may need is another menu item under the header image. I’ve got Home and About at the moment, but maybe if I could add References to take you to a page full of references, that would be the page to edit.

Only I don’t know how to do it. I think it’s possible, but the WordPress instructions are incomprehensible.

      • churchmouse says:

Perhaps add a page (or several) as I have with different dedicated categories.

If you wish to categorise links by pages — please excuse me if you’ve discovered this and do not wish to proceed — go to the traditional Stats / Dashboard page, click ‘Pages’ and add a new one. Name it as you like, e.g. Smokerphobia, and add your links. I found that I had to type the titles in and add the URLs. Perhaps WordPress has improved since I first created mine. However, you can categorise successfully using this method.

Other than that, have a limited set of Categories — thereby avoiding ‘Uncategorised’ — and elaborate further with the Tags.

That said, a set of pages might be better, depending on what you want.

Well censorship is alive and well in the UK today. I tried to post a response at BT.com http://home.bt.com/news/uk-news/smokefree-zones-trialled-in-bristol-11363959066651 today regarding the Bristol ban and my response goy deleted (censored) twice. In response to a comment asking for proof that second hand smoke was’t a risk I posted:

There is significant evidence supporting the position that second hand smoke does not cause harm. You could actually find much of it by conducting a search on Google, but to assist here a a few representative links:
Perhaps you could look at “The Totalitarian Crusade Against Second-Hand Smoke,” as a start at http://reason.com/archives/2014/02/09/the-totalitarian-crusade-against-second
For example, see this article by a public health practitioner calling out the lies: http://www.breitbart.com/big-journalism/2013/08/22/pbs-guest-public-health-officials-lying-about-harm-from-second-hand-smoke/
“Scientific Evidence Shows Secondhand Smoke Is No Danger,” http://news.heartland.org/newspaper-article/2008/07/01/scientific-evidence-shows-secondhand-smoke-no-danger
“Study Finds No Link Between Secondhand Smoke And Cancer,” Forbes, 12/12/2013
    http://www.forbes.com/sites/danielfisher/2013/12/12/study-finds-no-link-between-secondhand-smoke-and-cancer/
See also “Surgeon General’s Communications Misrepresent Findings of Report; Tobacco Control Practitioners Appear Unable to Accurately Portray the Science,” by Dr. Michael Siegel (who is a tobacco control advocate) at http://tobaccoanalysis.blogspot.com/2006/06/surgeon-generals-communications.html Siegel who believes second hand smoke is a risk makes a strong case that the 2006 exaggerated its findings.
Other observers have much stronger criticisms–11 of which can be found at the following link: SURGEON GENERAL’S REPORT – 2006
    REBUTTALS at http://www.illinoissmokersrights.com/sg_report_rebuttals_2006.html
Also see “The Myth of Second Hand Smoke,” by Dr. Terry Simpson which provides a comprehensive assessment of the SHS issue at http://www.yourdoctorsorders.com/2009/01/the-myth-of-second-hand-smoke/
“Passive smoking – another of the Nanny State’s big lies,” by James Delingpole at the Telegraph summarizes many of the studies. http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamesdelingpole/100251229/passive-smoking-another-of-the-nanny-states-big-lies/
For a strong rebuttal take a look at Enstrom James E, Kabat Geoffrey C, Smith Davey. Environmental tobacco smoke and tobacco related mortality in a prospective study of Californians, 1960-98 BMJ 2003; 326:1057 This study finds:
“Results: For participants followed from 1960 until 1998 the age adjusted relative risk (95% confidence interval) for never smokers married to ever smokers compared with never smokers married to never smokers was 0.94 (0.85 to 1.05) for coronary heart disease, 0.75 (0.42 to 1.35) for lung cancer, and 1.27 (0.78 to 2.08) for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease among 9619 men, and 1.01 (0.94 to 1.08), 0.99 (0.72 to 1.37), and 1.13 (0.80 to 1.58), respectively, among 25 942 women. No significant associations were found for current or former exposure to environmental tobacco smoke before or after adjusting for seven confounders and before or after excluding participants with pre-existing disease. No significant associations were found during the shorter follow up periods of 1960-5, 1966-72, 1973-85, and 1973-98.”
“Conclusions: The results do not support a causal relation between environmental tobacco smoke and tobacco related mortality, although they do not rule out a small effect. The association between exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and coronary heart disease and lung cancer may be considerably weaker than generally believed.”
    http://www.bmj.com/content/326/7398/1057
The strongest case is actually made by the tobacco control lobby itself in numerous document where they claim the case for second hand smoke needed to be established to create pressure on smokers to quit. This position was posited in 1975 by Sir George Godber you can read dozens of source documents here: http://www.rampant-antismoking.com

Then believing that post may be too long I posted a shorter version which was also removed:

For a start look at take a look at Enstrom James E, Kabat Geoffrey C, Smith Davey. Environmental tobacco smoke and tobacco related mortality in a prospective study of Californians, 1960-98 BMJ 2003; 326:1057. http://www.bmj.com/content/326
This study found “No significant associations were found for current or former exposure to environmental tobacco smoke before or after adjusting for seven confounders and before or after excluding participants with pre-existing disease.

    Finally, I posted:

Dear content editor, Why are you censoring my responses that provide links to studies that provide evidence that second hand smoke is not the health threat asserted by tobacco control?

At the time of this post this response has been up for 12 minutes. )I wonder if they will leave it up?

    • nisakiman says:

It may simply be that there are too many links. Even Frank’s blog will automatically put posts into moderation if there are more than two or three links, and he has to physically fish them out. The best way to deal with it is to try splitting your reply into several chunks, each containing no more than two links.

That said, it is also quite possible that they just don’t wish to publish the information you have provided because they are agenda driven, and you are questioning their version of events.

It happens to me on a regular basis.

      Case in point.

Cross border raids in £110m tobacco fraud probe

“Two illegal tobacco factories and more than 14 tonnes of tobacco have been uncovered by raids in Ireland and Blackpool.

Five people from Tyrone and Down in Northern Ireland have been arrested by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officers as part of a cross-border investigation into a suspected £110m tobacco fraud.

HMRC investigators, accompanied by Police Service of Northern Ireland officers, searched nine addresses in Down, Tyrone and Armagh on Tuesday 3 February. Simultaneous searches took place in the Irish Republic at Louth and Dublin by officers from Revenue’s Custom Service with police.”

“A tobacco processing plant, 12 tonnes of raw tobacco, two million cigarettes and £50,000 in cash were seized during the operation in Northern Ireland.

Days earlier more than 2.2 tonnes of hand-rolling tobacco, worth an estimated £397,000 in lost duty and taxes, was seized and a suspected illicit tobacco factory dismantled in Blackpool by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The tobacco was found in various stages of processing during searches of an industrial unit by Lancashire Police on Saturday 31 January. Shredding, cutting and drying machinery were also seized by HMRC during the operation. Investigations into the seizures are ongoing.”
