Maybe the WHO is too busy. It’s web site is loaded with reports on long-range global warming risks, deadly sugar warnings and other initiatives. On Tuesday, as the Ebola crisis grew, the WHO’s global tobacco control convention met in Moscow. Meetings were to be public, but the sessions attended by 170 countries were closed on Monday and the media removed and press conferences cancelled. One news report said the convention, officially known as the Conference of the Parties (COP6) to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control , secretly approved a global tobacco tax that would double and triple the price of cigarettes. What’s next — a tax on sugar, one of the WHO’s preoccupations?
As with carbon, tobacco control plan is to have a tobacco-free world by 2040 — or some such date.
Charges that the WHO bungled Ebola have come from many sources, including World Bank President Dr. Jim Yong Kim. The New York Times reported Monday that Mr. Kim, at a public meeting, took a shot at Dr. Margaret Chan, head of the WHO. According to the Times, Mr. Kim addressed Ms. Chan directly at a meeting at World Bank headquarters last month: “You have the authority to act in this emergency, he told her, according to people familiar with the meeting, ‘so why aren’t you doing it?’”

World Health Organisation admits botching response to Ebola outbreak
“The World Health Organisation has admitted it botched attempts to stop the now-spiraling Ebola outbreak in west Africa, blaming factors including incompetent staff and a lack of information.
“Nearly everyone involved in the outbreak response failed to see some fairly plain writing on the wall,” WHO said in a draft internal document obtained by the Associated Press, noting that experts should have realised that traditional containment methods wouldn’t work in a region with porous borders and broken health systems.
The UN health agency acknowledged that, at times, even its own bureaucracy was a problem. It noted that the heads of WHO country offices in Africa are “politically motivated appointments” made by the WHO regional director for Africa, Dr Luis Sambo, who does not answer to the agency’s chief in Geneva, Dr Margaret Chan.
Dr Peter Piot, the co-discoverer of the Ebola virus, agreed in an interview on Friday that WHO acted far too slowly, largely because of its Africa office.
“It’s the regional office in Africa that’s the frontline,” he said. “And they didn’t do anything. That office is really not competent.”
“But he said WHO might have been scarred by its experience during the 2009 swine flu pandemic, when it was slammed for hyping the situation.
In late April, during a teleconference on Ebola among infectious disease experts that included WHO, Doctors Without Borders and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, questions were apparently raised about the performance of WHO experts, as not all of them bothered to send Ebola reports to WHO headquarters.
WHO said it was “particularly alarming” that the head of its Guinea office refused to help get visas for an expert Ebola team to come in and $500,000 in aid was blocked by administrative hurdles.”
“At a meeting of WHO’s network of outbreak experts in June, Dr Bruce Aylward, who is normally in charge of polio eradication, alerted Chan to the serious concerns being raised about WHO’s leadership in west Africa. He wrote an email that some of the agency’s partners including national health agencies and charities believed the agency was “compromising rather than aiding” the response to Ebola and that “none of the news about WHO’s performance is good.”
Five days later, Chan received a six-page letter from the agency’s network of experts, spelling out what they saw as severe shortcomings in WHO’s response to the deadly virus.

The World Health Organization thus pre-emptively blames “the world” if ever the situation should worsen. This is a piece of impudence, because in fact, it should have been the task of the WHO to prevent the spread of the disease at a stage when it was still manageable.
So the WHO admits it’s incompetent handling of the epidemic when informed about it’s existence but blames everyone and everything else, the world if need be.
The FACT that Margaret Chan flew to Moskow at the beginning of this week to dream up more (rather expensive) torment for law abiding people instead of showing her face in Montrovia cannot be blamed on anyone!

And where not only old and already sick people die, but also many previously healthy adults between the age of 30 and 45, there are orphans left behind, old people left unprovided for, and fields left uncultivated, so that further misery is preprogrammed into a vicious circle that can last for years.

Earlier this month, two children who were among the thousands orphaned by the virus, were visited by aid workers in Liberia’s capital, Monrovia. At the time, the workers did not have the resources to take the children away. When they returned days later, the children were dead. They died not from Ebola, but starvation.

Ebola is a serious concern; but, it is a rather rare disease.
It has been a problem in three countries in West Africa since Dec of 2013, almost a year,
Those countries have had 9,000 cases of Ebola and 5,000 deaths out of a total population of 22 million.
That is an incidence rate of 4/100ths of 1% and a death rate of 2/100ths of 1%.
Those three countries have a normal death rate of about 2% per year or 440,000 total deaths on average.
The 5,000 deaths from Ebola are a 1% increase in the total death rate.
For every 100 deaths before the Ebola outbreak, there are now 101 deaths.
This is a concern; but, not a catastrophe.

The Seattle-based Gates Foundation said yesterday its $150,000 grant would look at the possibility of using Chinese hamster ovary cells, similar to how many other complex biotechnology drugs are made, Callahan said. While the technique “offers a slower route than plant production, the infrastructure for manufacturing in CHO cells is well established, which means that production can be scaled up rapidly,” he said.
The smoker haters would rather go the long way and sacrifice a lot of animals for a low vaccine yield than approaching tobacco companies who do already have a well established method of tobacco growth.
The Texas A&M Center for Innovation in Advanced Development & Manufacturing is in daily talks with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services about how it and its partner, Caliber Biotherapeutics LLC, can product large quantities of ZMapp from tobacco plants, a Texas A&M official said.

“We possess high capabilities for production in plants, which is the process necessary for manufacturing the experimental Ebola therapeutic, ZMapp,” Brett P. Giroir, chief executive office of the Texas A&M Health Science Center, in an e-mailed statement.
The Caliber facility could produce 25 kilograms to 75 kilograms of ZMapp antibody per year, based on preliminary estimates, starting within weeks to months of an order from the U.S., Giroir said. The production facility and its capabilities were created in a joint effort between Texas A&M and Caliber, he said.
ZMapp is difficult to make in large quantities for a number of reasons, researchers said. It involves three antibodies, which triples the amount of tobacco plants needed. In addition, the dose used to treat patients is high compared with many drugs, increasing the needed supply.
The amount of tobacco plants is not a problem; they grow rapidly virtually everywhere and ‘no animals or humans were harmed’ in the process of mass producing a vaccine; something that pleases the animal protection leagues!
The tobacco plant is a winner.

There seem to be a few organisations working alongside the Liberians in an effort to contain the spread of Ebola. Tobacco Control is not one of them and I do not recall seeing delegates from The WHO in this report.
The Liberians need to be told where the WHO delegates were found last week and what their priority is!!!
Defund the WHO – send the money to those who actually do work in the Ebola affected areas!!!
