Critics Pile In

Other critics are piling in on the WHO.

Terence Corcoran in the Financial Post:

Terence Corcoran: WHO battles climate and sugar, misses Ebola

Countless bazillions have been spent over decades by the United Nations, the World Health Organization and the World Bank to save the world from climate change, tobacco, sugar, fast foods and poverty, but when a real-life health crisis lands the great global collective of do-gooding bureaucracies has failed miserably. The World Health Organization, mostly silent on Ebola until six months ago, has now plastered its Web side with Ebola wallpaper. The UN and World Bank are also now rushing to cover their positions despite their obvious inability to respond to the crisis…

Maybe the WHO is too busy. It’s web site is loaded with reports on long-range global warming risks, deadly sugar warnings and other initiatives. On Tuesday, as the Ebola crisis grew, the WHO’s global tobacco control convention met in Moscow. Meetings were to be public, but the sessions attended by 170 countries were closed on Monday and the media removed and press conferences cancelled. One news report said the convention, officially known as the Conference of the Parties (COP6) to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control , secretly approved a global tobacco tax that would double and triple the price of cigarettes. What’s next — a tax on sugar, one of the WHO’s preoccupations?

As with carbon, tobacco control plan is to have a tobacco-free world by 2040 — or some such date.

Charges that the WHO bungled Ebola have come from many sources, including World Bank President Dr. Jim Yong Kim. The New York Times reported Monday that Mr. Kim, at a public meeting, took a shot at Dr. Margaret Chan, head of the WHO. According to the Times, Mr. Kim addressed Ms. Chan directly at a meeting at World Bank headquarters last month: “You have the authority to act in this emergency, he told her, according to people familiar with the meeting, ‘so why aren’t you doing it?’”

H/T MikeF for this WSJ piece (subscription only):

The Ebola Twilight of Public Institutions
The WHO and CDC are failing in their core health mission.

…Mr. Obama would have done more good by condemning the WHO. Responding to microbiological disasters is supposedly why the WHO exists—and tens of thousands of people may die as a result of the U.N.’s failure of this test of its mission, priorities and competence. “Yes, Ebola is truly an issue of international concern,” Dr. Chan told reporters in Russia, “but tobacco—if we put the evidence on the table—tobacco control is still the most cost-effective and efficient way of reducing unnecessary diseases and deaths arising from using such harmful products.”

Grover Norquist in the National Review:

Vaping for Tax Freedom
E-cigarettes have exposed the fraud of public-health advocates.
By Grover Norquist & Paul Blair

For years, people claiming to be public-health advocates have pushed for higher tobacco taxes. They argued that if you were to increase taxes on tobacco, consumers would be forced to kick their unhealthy habits and quit smoking cigarettes. And if you continued to increase prices, you could continue to accomplish the same results over and over again. In fact, over the past 13 years, federal and state governments have increased cigarette “sin” taxes more than 120 times. Smokers who didn’t quit were forced to fork over more and more, providing sizeable amounts of revenue to growing governments.

But recently, public-health do-gooders have found a new target for tax increases: e-cigarettes and vapor products. This new fight has exposed the movement for what it always was: nothing more than an attempt to extract more money from consumers. This was clear when President Obama violated his “firm pledge” not to raise any form of taxes on people making under $250,000 per year just 16 days into his presidency by signing a 156 percent increase in the federal cigarette tax. The do-gooder movement was never about public health; it was always about money….

Dave Atherton on Breitbart:

WORLD HEALTH ORG’S $20M, SECRET, TAXPAYER-FUNDED MEETING IN MOSCOW COULD RESULT IN $33-A-PACK CIGARETTES

…Meanwhile in the Philippines, Ian Smith, the Executive Director of the Director-General’s Office is giving a keynote address to the Regional Committee for the Western Pacific about the Ebola disease. He says, “The Director-General sends you her best wishes for a productive session. She is fully occupied with coordinating the international response to what is unquestionably the most severe acute public health emergency in modern times.”

Yes, fully occupied in Moscow talking tobacco in preference to what many would say is the far more pressing need of the Ebola outbreak.

What has really created dissent is the secret nature of the Moscow event. No media is allowed, and the votes taking place – including the one to back a “global tobacco tax”, which is said to have passed – are not being formally recorded…

The WHO is investing to save the world from poverty???? THAT IS NEWS!!! We all currently pay for ‘to save the world’ from climate change, tobacco, sugar and fast foods!

Thanks, MikeF, I did read this in Frank’s previous post:
and tens of thousands of people may die as a result of the U.N.’s failure of this test of its mission, priorities and competence. “Yes, Ebola is truly an issue of international concern,” Dr. Chan told reporters in Russia, “but tobacco—if we put the evidence on the table—tobacco control is still the most cost-effective and efficient way of reducing unnecessary diseases and deaths arising from using such harmful products.

We do need to hold Ms Chan DIRECTLY responsible for the next 10,000 Ebola deaths (REAL deaths!!!) and drag her in front of the courts to list all “tobacco deaths” by what is stated on peoples’ death certificates, EXCLUDING ALL NATURALLY OCCURING OLD PEOPLE’S DISEASES.
Defunding the WHO cannot come soon enough if we want to get a hold of the rapidly spreading, by now increasingly mutating deadly micro-organisms.

    The E-cigarette:
But recently, public-health do-gooders have found a new target for tax increases: e-cigarettes and vapor products. This new fight has exposed the movement for what it always was: nothing more than an attempt to extract more money from consumers.

Tax and “medical” use to be sold as NRT, thus opening a route for the pharmaceutical industry to cash in cheaply. Why would they consider spending a considerable amount of money on e.g. Ebola vaccines when they can make more money on first generation e-cigarettes?

Vapers, wake up! Mrs. Chan has a surprise for you when she gets back from her publicly paid wine&dine&blabb in Moskow.

  3. As I wrote at Leg-iron’s a few days ago. (It was ‘conspiracy loon’ territory a few years ago, but not now, surely?)….

The UN was set up to organise the World Government. The different agencies, all apparently caring about health, education, peace, etc., was just the cover. They couldn’t well publicise their real intents.

Take the WHO. Frank wrote a post about its first director-general, Brock Chisholm – https://cfrankdavis.wordpress.com/2014/03/22/brock-chisholm/

This notion that nation-states are the cause of war is now a modern orthodoxy, routinely trotted out as a justification for the EU into which European states are to be dissolved, after being ‘bought through guile’, and bound by treaties of cooperation such as the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Chisholm was also an advocate of world government, saying:

“To achieve world government, it is necessary to remove from the minds of men their individualism, loyalty to family traditions, national patriotism, and religious dogmas.”

He was also a eugenicist, like UNESCO’s first D-G: eugenicist and internationalist Julian Huxley, grandson of Thomas Huxley aka ‘Darwin’s Bulldog’.

Julian was president of the British Eugenics Society and a founder of the World Wildlife Fund.

The UN is the cover for World Government and eugenics/depopulation.

Like our Western culture has been subverted by socialists posing as do-gooders in the same fields: health, education, saving the planet, ‘equality’, etc. to weaken us to acclimatise us to socialist World Government and rob us of our sovereignty and freedoms in the name of environmentalism, healthism, peace and tolerance. It is all made to sound comforting and sensible so that people generally/eventually accept it. Mainstream media propaganda and compromised politicians have ensured its success.

    ——————

That is ALL that the WHO and UN in general exists for. Their hubris now extends to ejecting the public and press while discussing global taxation of immense proportions. Even the MSM are reporting it. Will the people wake up? No.

Let’s stop being outraged at what they don’t do – like taking ebola seriously – or what they shouldn’t do – like changing the definition of ‘pandemic’ so their friends, the Pharmers, can sell hundreds of millions more flu vaccines to governments.

    • Zippgun says:

Yes, Stewart – and Stalin’s man in the US state department (well, one of them) Mr Alger Hiss, was a key figure in the founding of the UN, and its first secretary general – .

This man understood the agenda and how it was to be implemented 60 years ago –

“Today the path to total dictatorship in the United States can be laid by strictly legal means, unseen and unheard by Congress, the President, or the people. We have a well-organized political action group in this country, determined to destroy our Constitution and establish a one-party state. It has a foothold within our Government, and its own propaganda apparatus. One may call this group by many names. Some people call it socialism, some collectivism. I prefer to call it ‘democratic centralism.’ The important point to remember about this group is not its ideology but its organization. It is a dynamic, aggressive, elite corps, forcing its way through every opening, to make a breach for a collectivist one-party state. It operates secretly, silently, continuously to transform our Government without our suspecting the change is underway. This secret revolutionary corps understands well the power to influence the people by an elegant form of brainwashing. We see this, for example, in the innocent use of words like ‘democracy’ in place of ‘representative government.’ ”

      – Republican Senator William E Jenner (1908 – 1985) of Indiana, before the U.S. Senate on Feb. 23, 1954.

For US also read UK, Europe…

We see Jenner’s “elegant brainwashing” going on every day – tobacco, the climate fraud, “you are little Englanders, haters, racists etc” if you want to inhabit your own country and have some say in its governance. In the UK, Jenner’s destruction of the “Constitution” was the assault on our institutions and “system” which came with the demolition, corrupting, vandalizing, and warping of them by the radical Marxists of New Labour after the Bliar creature’s election, plus, crucially, the ongoing replacement of democratic self government by the international institutions of the EU. The “one party state” here is the UK Triad of Lib/Lab/Con, which offer an illusion of democratic choice, masking what is actually permanent oligarchical dictatorship.Three heads of the same hydra pretending to be opposing each other while secretly agreeing on everything of consequence. The one party state internationally is also the EU Commission.

” It operates secretly, silently, continuously to transform our Government without our suspecting the change is underway”

Entryism into the main political parties, the civil service, local administration, the quangocracy, the so called charities, the broadcast media, the law, and very crucially, education. All to to forward a common purpose….

And who were these shadowy figures?

“The American Committee on United Europe announced yesterday that Mrs. Albert D. Lasker, Mrs. John J. McCloy and Ernest A. Gross had been elected to the committee’s board of directors. Mrs. Lasker, president of the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation, also is a director of the American Cancer Society and of the Menninger Foundation. Mrs. McCloy, wife of the former United States Commissioner to Germany, is a member of the board of governors of the National Red Cross and of the board of managers of Bellevue Hospital. Mr. Gross, partner in the New York law firm of Gross & Hyde, has served in the Department of State and as deputy representative of the United States to the United Nations.” (Plan for United Europe. New York Times, March 28, 1954, pg. 21.)

And Mrs. McCloy’s husband was a partner of Albert Goodsell Milbank in the law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy. He was also an officer of the Milbank Memorial Fund, established in 1905 by his cousin, Elizabeth Milbank Anderson. “Although a Republican in politics, Mr. Milbank supported some of the social reforms of the early New Deal of Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1933 he advocated compulsory, comprehensive, social insurance against illness, accident, unemployment, old-age and death.” (Albert Milbank, Lawyer, 76, Dies. New York Times, Sep. 8, 1949.) He was a member of the General Committee of the American Society for the Control of Cancer when it received its big unconditional gift of $100,000 from John D. Rockefeller. (Rockefeller Aids Cancer Study Fund. New York Times, May 3, 1926.) His son, Samuel R. Milbank, was an officer of the Milbank Memorial Fund from 1934 until his death in 1985. He married the daughter of a superintendent of the United Fruit Company. His other son, Robbins Milbank, married Helen Paull Kirkpatrick, whose brother, Lyman B. Kirkpatrick Jr., was inspector general of the C.I.A. His son, David L. Milbank, worked for the C.I.A. in the Directorate of Plans, the Directorate of Operations, the Office of National Estimates, the Directorate of Intelligence, and the Intelligence Community Staff until retiring in 1985.

      • Thanks, Zippgun. I hadn’t heard that quotation before. The Senator caught on early to the abuse of the word, “democracy”. I hear so many otherwise generally clued-up people using this word constantly that I feel like screaming!

I’ve said it before, but it’s well worth repeating ad nauseam, as Lenin said, “Democracy is indispensable to socialism.”

Kofi Anan expressed his disappointment on how the UN handles the Ebola epidemic. A lot of money has been pledged, very little has arrived. Perhaps we could use the monies set aside for the fictional life style deaths ‘epidemic’ and use it for a VERY REAL one by defunding the WHO and it’s croo…. erm partners!!! … except that, whereas rates of LC are given ‘Per 100,000 People’ in the English-language original and in various translations, the exact same rates somehow apply to 150,000 in the Turkish version (‘150.000 kişide’). As GaryK commented about the graph: “The LCD rate is completely false. US Govt data shows the rate for 1950 to be 21.6/100,000 for men and the 1980 rate to be 71.9/100,000”, so whatever the motivation for making ‘evil’ cigarettes appear less hazardous by a third to the people of one particular country, this is only par for the course for these professional manipulators.

  7. Rose says:

World Health Organisation admits botching response to Ebola outbreak

“The World Health Organisation has admitted it botched attempts to stop the now-spiraling Ebola outbreak in west Africa, blaming factors including incompetent staff and a lack of information.

“Nearly everyone involved in the outbreak response failed to see some fairly plain writing on the wall,” WHO said in a draft internal document obtained by the Associated Press, noting that experts should have realised that traditional containment methods wouldn’t work in a region with porous borders and broken health systems.

The UN health agency acknowledged that, at times, even its own bureaucracy was a problem. It noted that the heads of WHO country offices in Africa are “politically motivated appointments” made by the WHO regional director for Africa, Dr Luis Sambo, who does not answer to the agency’s chief in Geneva, Dr Margaret Chan.

Dr Peter Piot, the co-discoverer of the Ebola virus, agreed in an interview on Friday that WHO acted far too slowly, largely because of its Africa office.

“It’s the regional office in Africa that’s the frontline,” he said. “And they didn’t do anything. That office is really not competent.”

“But he said WHO might have been scarred by its experience during the 2009 swine flu pandemic, when it was slammed for hyping the situation.

In late April, during a teleconference on Ebola among infectious disease experts that included WHO, Doctors Without Borders and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, questions were apparently raised about the performance of WHO experts, as not all of them bothered to send Ebola reports to WHO headquarters.

WHO said it was “particularly alarming” that the head of its Guinea office refused to help get visas for an expert Ebola team to come in and $500,000 in aid was blocked by administrative hurdles.”

“At a meeting of WHO’s network of outbreak experts in June, Dr Bruce Aylward, who is normally in charge of polio eradication, alerted Chan to the serious concerns being raised about WHO’s leadership in west Africa. He wrote an email that some of the agency’s partners including national health agencies and charities believed the agency was “compromising rather than aiding” the response to Ebola and that “none of the news about WHO’s performance is good.”

Five days later, Chan received a six-page letter from the agency’s network of experts, spelling out what they saw as severe shortcomings in WHO’s response to the deadly virus.

“This (was) the first news of this sort to reach her,” WHO said in the draft document. “She is shocked.”

But he said WHO might have been scarred by its experience during the 2009 swine flu pandemic, when it was slammed for hyping the situation

    That would be this then.

The pandemic that never was: Drug firms ‘encouraged world health body to exaggerate swine flu threat’

“Declaring a swine flu pandemic was a ‘monumental error’, driven by profit-hungry drug companies spreading fear, an influential report has concluded.
It led to huge amounts of taxpayers’ money being wasted in stockpiling vaccines, it added.

Paul Flynn, the Labour MP charged with investigating the handling of the swine flu outbreak for the Council of Europe, described it as ‘a pandemic that never really was’.

The report accuses the World Health Organisation of grave shortcomings in the transparency of the process that led to its warning last year.
The MP said that the world relied on the WHO, but after ‘crying wolf’, its reputation was in jeopardy”

“The focus on swine flu also led to other health services suffering and widespread public fear.
Pharmaceutical companies, however, profited to the tune of £4.6billion from the sale of vaccines alone.”

    • beobrigitte says:

An “Expert Ebola Team”? Who and WHAT is meant by this? The Liberian doctors on the ground did NOT ask for being lectured by “experts”, they asked for medicines, safety gear and funding for hospitals to be built!! There were few medics there to begin with, now there are even fewer of them

Here something Prof. Grieshaber wrote (16.9.14):

… “WHO and its Director-General will continue to advocate for more Ebola treatment beds in Liberia and elsewhere, and will hold the world accountable for responding to this dire emergency with its unprecedented dimensions of human suffering”.

The World Health Organization thus pre-emptively blames “the world” if ever the situation should worsen. This is a piece of impudence, because in fact, it should have been the task of the WHO to prevent the spread of the disease at a stage when it was still manageable.

So the WHO admits it’s incompetent handling of the epidemic when informed about it’s existence but blames everyone and everything else, the world if need be.
The FACT that Margaret Chan flew to Moskow at the beginning of this week to dream up more (rather expensive) torment for law abiding people instead of showing her face in Montrovia cannot be blamed on anyone!

Another thing Prof. Grieshaber pointed out 1 month ago:
The consequences of the Ebola epidemic for the entire population of the affected areas are immediately visible and tangible. It is not only those falling ill from Ebola fever who suffer. Where health workers fall ill themselves (which happens to an alarming extent), or no longer come to work for fear of contagion (which also happens often enough), other patients cannot be treated, and the risk of death from actually-treatable diseases increases. And where not only old and already sick people die, but also many previously healthy adults between the age of 30 and 45, there are orphans left behind, old people left unprovided for, and fields left uncultivated, so that further misery is preprogrammed into a vicious circle that can last for years.

The first reports of food shortage emerge:
      http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/ebola-outbreak-famine-approaches-toadd-to-west-africas-torment-9799944.html

Earlier this month, two children who were among the thousands orphaned by the virus, were visited by aid workers in Liberia’s capital, Monrovia. At the time, the workers did not have the resources to take the children away. When they returned days later, the children were dead. They died not from Ebola, but starvation.

  10. garyk30 says:

    Let’s get realistic here.
Ebola is a serious concern; but, it is a rather rare disease.
It has been a problem in three countries in West Africa since Dec of 2013, almost a year,

Those countries have had 9,000 cases of Ebola and 5,000 deaths out of a total population of 22 million.

That is an incidence rate of 4/100ths of 1% and a death rate of 2/100ths of 1%.

Those three countries have a normal death rate of about 2% per year or 440,000 total deaths on average.

The 5,000 deaths from Ebola are a 1% increase in the total death rate.

For every 100 deaths before the Ebola outbreak, there are now 101 deaths.

This is a concern; but, not a catastrophe.

        http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-10-10/new-method-sought-to-make-ebola-drug-grown-from-tobacco.html

The Seattle-based Gates Foundation said yesterday its $150,000 grant would look at the possibility of using Chinese hamster ovary cells, similar to how many other complex biotechnology drugs are made, Callahan said. While the technique “offers a slower route than plant production, the infrastructure for manufacturing in CHO cells is well established, which means that production can be scaled up rapidly,” he said.

The smoker haters would rather go the long way and sacrifice a lot of animals for a low vaccine yield than approaching tobacco companies who do already have a well established method of tobacco growth.

The Texas A&M Center for Innovation in Advanced Development & Manufacturing is in daily talks with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services about how it and its partner, Caliber Biotherapeutics LLC, can product large quantities of ZMapp from tobacco plants, a Texas A&M official said.
        Drug Manufacturing

“We possess high capabilities for production in plants, which is the process necessary for manufacturing the experimental Ebola therapeutic, ZMapp,” Brett P. Giroir, chief executive office of the Texas A&M Health Science Center, in an e-mailed statement.

The Caliber facility could produce 25 kilograms to 75 kilograms of ZMapp antibody per year, based on preliminary estimates, starting within weeks to months of an order from the U.S., Giroir said. The production facility and its capabilities were created in a joint effort between Texas A&M and Caliber, he said.

ZMapp is difficult to make in large quantities for a number of reasons, researchers said. It involves three antibodies, which triples the amount of tobacco plants needed. In addition, the dose used to treat patients is high compared with many drugs, increasing the needed supply.

The amount of tobacco plants is not a problem; they grow rapidly virtually everywhere and ‘no animals or humans were harmed’ in the process of mass producing a vaccine; something that pleases the animal protection leagues!

The tobacco plant is a winner.

I really do wonder what the Liberians make of that. It made me angry! – “Clear the air – stop smoking” …
There seem to be a few organisations working alongside the Liberians in an effort to contain the spread of Ebola. Tobacco Control is not one of them and I do not recall seeing delegates from The WHO in this report.

The Liberians need to be told where the WHO delegates were found last week and what their priority is!!!
