^ What Tom said. Thanks again for the gift that just keeps on giving – this terrific, inspiring blog.

Incidentally, I kid you not it’s freaking 28 degrees Celsius here today. Almost turned the air conditioning on yesterday round about 3 PM but decided that it would be just too caddish a thing to do.

I’m actually up in the Sierra Foothills way east of San Francisco right now and up here, it actually snowed a few weeks back and killed all the flowers, then a freeze set in and turned everything to ice. Now we are down into the 30’s F, but not quite freezing, overnight. Heading back to Bay Area this weekend, but it will still not be as balmy as down in SoCal where you are. Santa Cruz was on the news here a few nights back, I forget what for, but brought back old memories, since Santa Cruz, San Jose and San Francisco are probably the three places I grew up the most, over the years, spent the bulk of my time, as you did in Santa Cruz you said, back when it was still less Soviet and anti-smoking as it is unfortunately nowadays. Merry Christmas then to you too.

PS: Beo Bridgitte’s comment and article below, on Moscovites now being encouraged to film the “crime of smoking” and “turning smokers in” to police – I think I will comment, SF or Moscow? Are you sure?

I’d like to echo magnetico’s sentiments and wish all followers of Frank’s blog a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

I sincerely hope that 2014 will see us excavating more of the sandy foundations of Tobacco Control. I would dearly love to see their house of cards (to mix my metaphors) come tumbling down while I am still walking this earth.

  9. margo says:

And from me, Frank – Happy Christmas to one and all, and thanks for another year of good blogs and smoking anger! xxx

    Merry Christmas to you all!

This blog is a daily sign of hope in our fight against this death cult that is called “Tobacco Control”. Yes, Tobacco Control is worshipping a slow, painful and lonesome “old-age death”, following a shallow life without risk (according to their own definition) but also without any enjoyment, a whole life in agony, so to speak. Their movement is about nothing else. I wonder how such a death-cult has ever been able to gain momentum and develop into a state-subsidised industry with paid jobs, but Tobacco Control did. Well, thanks to people like Frank, they will not succeed.

Perhaps we could extend our Christmas wishes also to the populations of the former East block countries; I just stumbled across this:

Especially the anti-smoker comment is a Deja-vu experience not to be missed!!!!

“Cigarette smokers of Moscow, already beleaguered by last month’s ban on smoking in public places, must now be advised to beware any passerby with a recording device if they decide to risk having a smoke inside.

Moscow police officers will accept photographs and video recordings of people smoking in entranceways as evidence of a crime, Lyudmila Stebenkova, head of the Moscow City Duma’s committee for public health, said.

“How else can we fight smoking in entranceways if there are no cameras?” Stebenkova said, reported.

There are about 140,000 surveillance cameras in public spaces around Moscow but none in the city’s entranceways, which, as any Moscow resident can tell you, have long been a haven for smokers.

A countrywide ban on lighting up inside or within 15 meters of government buildings and other public places went into effect on Nov. 15 and will extend to restaurants, trains and hotels in the coming year.

The new law has already seen active enforcement from over 20,000 citizens who signed on to help implement the ban, said Alexei Mayorov, head of the city’s regional security department.

So far about 1,000 Muscovites have been penalized for violating the ban, each receiving fines of up to 3,000 rubles, Rapsi reported Monday.

Mikhail Pashkin, head of the Moscow police trade union, advised against actually recording a neighbor smoking. “Such actions can provoke the neighbor to a conflict. It’s better to calmly explain that the smoke bothers you,” Pashkin said.

Video seems to be an increasingly popular way of catching those who break rules in Russia. Police have started using recordings from car dashboard cameras to catch traffic violators and the Education Ministry recently announced it will use video surveillance to monitor the Unified State Exam starting next year.”

Moscow or Soviet San Francisco – are you sure?

        • beobrigitte says:

According to Netzwerk Rauchen it’s Moskow. But I thought that Californian/American readers of Frank’s blog have a special deja-vu experience….

        • Tom says:

Yes, we do. Also, and beside the point maybe, but San Francisco is one of those very international cities, with lots of embassies and foreign visitors from overseas. But there are a real lot of Russian speaking people settled here and some areas almost like Little Moscow with Russian delis and bakeries and restaurants, all close to one another, within the neighborhood. I wonder if maybe they put up with the outdoor bans here, in SF, first, then ran over to Moscow, just a few of them, but suggested they now do the same over there. But they could have learned about outdoor bans, here in SF, then someone nasty and on the grift could have run back over there to say how much money they can make from persecuting smokers in Moscow, like they’re certainly already used to here in SF. But just something I am guessing, and half heartedly, not seriously, though it may be possible. Stranger things have happened, in the spread of anti-smoking, how it goes from one part of the world to the next, in sequence.

        • beobrigitte says:

You do have a point; the anti-smoking disease spreads faster and further than the bubonic plague ever did!!!! It crosses political walls and dehumanizes law abiding citizens everywhere.

In the 70s I did watch the film “Der Pate” (can’t remember the english title right now)

I guess, we ALL, regardless where we live, are going to be on the receiving end….. Perhaps they will cart us off in freight trains, too……….

I am still ok. And my PC has not been shot down as yet.
