Tasting like an Ashtray

I don’t usually pay any attention at all to dietary advice. I just eat whatever I feel like eating. But I got interested in Dr Joel Wallach when somebody left a comment with a YouTube link of him speaking someplace. I ended up watching the video, and the other 8 videos accompanying it.

Wallach had been a vet, and he said that domesticated animals were fed very precise quantities of minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates and so on in pellet form. It was the result of a century or more of careful experimentation. He said that a great many diseases – like scurvy, rickets, goitre, anaemia, beri-beri, pellagra – were Nutritional Deficiency diseases. They happened when diets lacked key ingredients. And they were cured by providing the missing ingredients. And many of these ingredients were minerals. There were, he said, 9 minerals that plants needed to be healthy, but 60 minerals that humans needed.

After working as a vet for many years, Wallach also got himself qualified to practise human medicine as well. But he was scathing about doctors. He said that people who ignored medical advice – eating eggs and butter, smoking cigarettes and drinking whisky and not doing exercise – had better health than the ones who took medical advice. He said that the advice of the medical profession was pretty worthless, because doctors themselves only lived on average to the age of 58. He also said that the Japanese, who (against medical advice) were heavy smokers, and who also (against medical advice) ate a lot of salt, had the highest longevity in the world. He said that in the USA 300,000 people a year were killed by medical negligence, and 3.5 million killed, injured, or infected through medical malpractice.

I guess that the reason that I took notice of him was that I eat eggs and butter, and smoke cigarettes, and drink whisky, and do very little exercise, and it’s heartening to find someone who says that there’s nothing wrong with doing that. And also because, given the war they’ve launched on smoking and drinking, my opinion of doctors has plummeted in recent years. Though not quite as far as his. He called them ‘quacks’. Which oddly enough, is what my father used to call them.

There wasn’t quite perfect, eye-to-eye agreement, though. He regarded frying food as a good way to kill yourself, because margarine and oil was full of free radicals. And, well, I fry stuff quite often. And while I like eggs, I don’t eat six of them every day like he does.

He said that the people with the highest longevity in the world were the Hanza(?) from the Karakorum mountains, and the fact that they watered their plants with mineral-rich glacier waters probably explained their longevity. He also said that adding wood ash to soil had long been known as a way of increasing plant growth and health. And they did this too. Ash, he said, consisted of the minerals present in the burned plants.

I got interested in wood ash at this point, and did a bit of investigating.

Generally, wood ash contains less than 10 percent potash, 1 percent phosphate and trace amounts of micro-nutrients such as iron, manganese, boron, copper and zinc. Trace amounts of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, nickel and chromium also may be present. Wood ash does not contain nitrogen. The largest component of wood ash (about 25 percent) is calcium carbonate, a common liming material that increases soil alkalinity.

It then occurred to me that cigarette ash is most likely made up of the same set of minerals. In fact, maybe a lot more, given the “4,000 chemicals” that are supposed to be present in tobacco smoke, and that I could probably use my own cigarette ash as a fertilizer for the plants I’m growing (I think I may actually do this).

I’d just begun to start thinking of cigarette ash as a valuable source of minerals, when I came across reports of cats eating cigarette ash, and pigeons too, and even people.

As I toddled around my grandmother’s living room, my cousin would carefully prepare an ashtray as if it was a savory plate of appetizers and she was Rachel Ray. Pushing cigarette butts to one side and sifting ashes to the other, she would call me over, a smile spreading across her five-year-old face, and say, “Eat this.” I happily obliged, licking a tiny finger, then eagerly plunging it into the smokers’ repository before I carried the delicacies to my lips. I continued, with her urging, until the glass bowl was spotless, and filters of L&M’s, Kent’s, and Kool’s were all that remained. She would move on to the next table with an ashtray, repeat the process, and wait patiently as I finished my hors d’oeuvres. This ritual went on for months before we were found out. The tell-tale grey ash lingering around the mouth of a two-year-old, the curiously clean ashtrays devoid of burned cigarette remains, and the carefully sorted filters eventually caught the attention of the adults.

…Forty-some years later, I can still remember the tangy, sweet taste of the melt-in-your-mouth delights.

So that’s what an ashtray tastes like: tangy, sweet, melt-in-the-mouth. And perfect for children. Worth remembering if anyone ever says that somebody ‘tastes like an ashtray’.

But I also thought that, since cigarette smoke consists in part of suspended particulates, these were probably ‘fly ash’. And as such it will be mineral rich, just like cigarette ash or wood ash. And when you inhale cigarette smoke, you get a low dose of a whole range of minerals, as well as nicotine and niacin and carbon monoxide and all the other goodies Rose tells us about.

It wouldn’t just be in tobacco smoke, but also in wood smoke, and probably coal smoke too. People who live in smoky environments are probably getting a mineral supplement to their diets. And when you take the smoke and its minerals away, they start getting nutritional deficiency disorders. Dr Joel Wallach reckoned that Alzheimer’s was a physician-generated deficiency disease. It hadn’t existed prior to 1979.

Anyway, I was quite impressed by the motormouth Dr Joel Wallach. He seemed to have the facts at his fingertips, and as a veterinarian he was coming out of an interesting left field. But how do you judge? How can you really tell if somebody really knows what they’re talking about?

Easy. You study the necktie that they’re wearing.

And the necktie that Dr Wallach was wearing, I felt, was a tad garish. In fact, it looked like a piece of Abstract Expressionism that might have been produced by William de Kooning or Jackson Pollock or maybe Joan Miro. Heck, it was almost a Vorticist necktie. And it was surrounded by an alarming number of lapel buttons too.

So, sorry, no chance that I’ll start eating six eggs a day anytime soon. But don’t take my word for it. Go take a look at that necktie yourself.

The latest from that loony-bin, Australia:

Friday’s mini-budget will contain bad news for smokers with a series of four 12.5 per cent annual increases in federal tobacco excise, pushing the price of cigarettes closer to the dollar-a-fag mark.
    http://www.theage.com.au/federal-politics/federal-election-2013/smokers-asked-to-cough-up-and-help-cover-labor-pledges-20130731-2qzhf.html?#comments

Got that? 4 x 12.5% increases in federal tobacco excise. It will push the cost of a pack of 20s to ~$20.

You would think Rudd owns stock in a bootlegger production run! We already know where this is going to end up…………..

  2. magnetic01 says:

The robber politicians are at it again. Extortionate taxes on tobacco have been the norm for decades. The increases in already extortionate taxes under this Labor government have been savage. Further, growing tobacco plants for personal use is illegal in Australia. If you want to use tobacco, you have to allow yourself to be fleeced by government. It’s a variant of the extortion of King James I hundreds of years ago.

Recently, the robber politicians legislated two automatic price rises in tobacco aligned to the CPI. This would save them the embarrassment of coming before the public each time in their extortionate ventures. But even this wasn’t enough for the thieves. From next year the rises will be linked to increases in average male earnings, which have been greater than the inflation rate.

Worse still is that smokers have to endure the standard “health spin” as they are being robbed. But this latest mega-robbery dreamed up by the Labor miscreants is extraordinarily perverse. With Rudd, the spin is further spun. That mystical, statistical tobacco “death toll” which is a nice round TOTAL of 15,000 per year suddenly becomes 15,000 for just “smoking-related” cancer. In a recent government report, the “additional health care cost” for “smoking-related” disease was estimated at around 300 million dollars (even this figure is arguable). To justify the billions extorted from smokers, the government concocted numerous “other” costs from smoking totaling $32b. But in Rudd’s hands, the concocted $32b becomes the figure just for “additional health care costs”. The magnitude of the lying spins the head.

Government benefits from the robbery. Antismoking groups then want their “cut” so that they can remain in comfortable employment and further “educate” the public with inflammatory propaganda. And pharmaceutical companies, that also finance antismoking, benefit in that they align the cost of their next-to-useless “nicotine replacement” products to the cost of tobacco; extortionate taxes also bring a clientele for their useless products. All those that create the statistical spin benefit financially while smokers are fleeced. Part of the fleecing goes to pay for antismoking campaigns, i.e., smokers are forced to pay for their own “denormalization/dehumanization”. It’s just – only – a regular money grab. Failed policies? Financial black holes? No problem. Let’s just go rob the smokers some more. This conduct could well be described as a racket that doesn’t let up.

At some point something’s got to give.

  3. magnetic01 says:

There was a presentation in the 1980s (see Godber Blueprint) at one of the World Conferences on Smoking & Health concerning the “cost of smoking” to the health system. There were no studies to that point. The presenter, who was partial to antismoking, concluded that smokers were not an additional cost. He also pointed out that these sorts of studies are highly arguable in that they rely on so many questionable assumptions. Obviously, the fanatics didn’t receive this presentation too well and simply disregarded it. For decades, they have been proclaiming that smoking/smokers are a burden to the health system, even though a number of studies over that time indicated that it is not true.

Through this fraudulent claim, the fanatics convinced governments to hike tobacco taxes to “cover” the extra medical services. Governments are only too happy to oblige; it means more money in the coffers. And the fanatics always insist that they should be given a cut of the extra taxes to continue “educating” the public, keeping them in comfortable employment. In the last decade, tobacco taxes have been hiked many times into the realm of compounded extortion. So inflated are the taxes that it’s impossible to hide the charade any longer.

Consider a recent “cost analysis” appearing in an Australian government publication; bear in mind that the Australian government is rabidly antismoking. Net health costs of tobacco-use was estimated at $318,400,000 (p.51). The net revenue from tobacco sales was $6,700,000,000 (p.22). The revenue from tobacco is 21 TIMES the “extra” cost of treating smokers. This difference is obscene. Even the extent of this “extra medical cost” is arguable.

    Click to access mono64.pdf

Governments and the fanatics that advised them aren’t going to come out and admit that they’ve severely overcharged smokers to the point of robbery and that the tax on tobacco should be considerably reduced. Given that the fantasy that smokers cost the health system can no longer be maintained, the fanatics do what they do regularly – they change the “argument” (storyline), i.e., shift the goalposts. NOW they argue, smokers [way] more than cover their additional health costs, but there are “other costs”. And the above report concocts around $32,000,000,000 of “other costs”, which are not actual government expenditures. There isn’t time to consider how all these “other costs” are entirely arguable. However, the absurdity of the claims attracted some rare criticism. Further, these “costs to the State” smack of a socialist framework where individuals are the property of the State, with the expectation of a particular, average “working life” able to be extracted from each individual.
    http://www.theage.com.au/national/economists-challenge-healthist-view-of-smoking-alcohol-risks-20111221-1p5nl.html

Shifting the “storyline” or goalposts keeps the ideological fanatics happy (and they usually call for additional funding to help “educate” the public), Big Pharma is happy because it can keep peddling and profiting from its essentially useless NRT wares. And the government is happy because it can claim that it needs to extort even more taxes from smokers. There is now a lucrative antismoker industry that did not exist 30 years ago. From part of the extortionate taxes, it is smokers that are financing a considerable portion of it: They are being forced to pay for their own persecution. It is a very sick, fraud-based, self-serving system. It can well be referred to as racketeering.

  4. Nightlight says:

@magnetic — smokers groups (if there are any over there) need to ask government to show the reduction in medical costs that resulted from the drop in smoking rates. In USA, the medical costs, along with numerous auto-immune and inflammatory diseases, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, obesity, depression,… and other diseases for which tobacco smoke is therapeutic/protective, rapidly grew as smoking declined. That’s why sickness industry, especially pharma, are so fierce in attacking tobacco, investing billions of dollars in producing & peddling antismoking pseudo-science, buying antismoking laws and regulations, promoting hate and oppression against smokers, etc. Nicotine replacement sales are a mere change compared to the massive profits they make by scaring away people from this ancient medicinal plant and the resulting increase in chronic, expensive diseases.

No way! Mum would stop me eating cigarette ash from the ashtray when I was a toddler or maybe 4 or 5. I have such clear memories of Sunday afternoons at my nan’s, with the rest of the assembled family, all smokers. As the adults talked, I would sneak round the ashtrays and try to pick up the perfect cylinders of cigarette ash and eat them. Until mum would catch me and made me stop because it was “dirty”.

I’ve wanted to share this memory for a while now but hesitated in case some one calls me ‘dirty’. The best tasting ones (or most satisfying) were the cylinders that my tiny fingers could lift intact, with minimal crumbing, to my lips. Or else I would flatten them and suck the black off my fingers. I was such a fussy eater as a baby and toddler, mum despaired, but I would quite happily empty an ashtray!

this was during the 70s, when children were ignored or left to their own devices by adults. You’ll have to have read ‘the Fourth Turning’ to understand this reference.

Cycles and seasons, like the way the prohibition-hungry generation reaches it’s zenith every 80 years or so. They reached this in the ‘Noughties’ with the various smoking bans, but now they are on the inevitable journey toward their nadir.

Though I have never even thought of tasting cigarette ash in my life, there is something of a precedent for this practice.

Tobacco water: A special form of tobacco use in the Mizoram and Manipur states of India

“In this, water impregnated with tobacco smoke in a water receptacle is poured out through the mouthpiece of a pipe into a tobacco water flask and preserved for personal use. Usually, in one sip, 5–10 ml of tobacco water is kept in the mouth for 5–10 minutes and then spat out. It is either sipped directly from the bottle or through cotton soaked with tobacco water. People initially use tobacco water to clean their teeth or protect themselves from insect bites, but soon start sipping it several times a day and get addicted.

Tobacco water (tuibur) has been in use since the nineteenth century. A definite record of its use is available since 1907. Men and women alike sip tobacco water. In the past, it was predominantly used by women and was offered to guests or visitors. It was a form of greeting and it was considered rude not to offer it. It was an essential item at parties in rural areas.”

“A family generally owned three tobacco water flasks—one carried by the husband, one by the wife and a spare one kept in the house. No adult went around without a flask. This was a common feature among the Lakhers (a tribal community in Mizoram) in the urban and rural areas.

During the process of courting, a girl would offer tobacco water to the boy. If the boy refused the tobacco water, it was presumed that he had no interest in the girl.”

“The quality of tobacco water is graded according to the concentration of tobacco smoke in the water. This is based on the quantity of tobacco used and the time taken for production—higher the concentration, better the quality (Table I). Tobacco water is sold in used glass bottles at many places such as stationery shops, daily markets or weekly markets (Fig. 2).

“About 90% of the people in both districts believed that tobacco water protects against the bites of insects and paalu (a common insect in the region). They believe that it acts as an antiseptic, protects the teeth and has antisnake venom properties.”

Every now and then you get a dazzling insight into the misperceptions of the opposition.

Clive Bates pleading the case for e-cigarettes.

“Almost all of the harm that arises from smoking is through the system of administration: the burning particles of tobacco, hot toxic gases and products of combustion that are the smoke.”

“These risks are likely to be small and manageable compared to what we know of the burning hot tar particulates and toxic gases taken into the lungs through cigarette smoke.”

Health campaigners want to ban e-cigarettes internationally – unethical and unscientific

It sounds like we are inhaling burning embers, still sparking with flame, sprinkled with splashes of boiling oil borne on searing gases.

I have no reason to doubt that he believes it.

But such a belief lacks the element of time and probability.

It is true that my cup of coffee was made with boiling water, but it ceased to boil when I poured it into my cold cup, the temperature decreased again when I put the milk in and further time elapsed while I took it to the table, but the coffee is still far hotter when I drink it than the smoke from my cigarette.

As both are drawn into my mouth and on to my tongue first, before going to my stomach or my lungs, I am perfectly able to tell the difference in temperature between the hot coffee and the much cooler smoke.

That anyone could be inhaling still “burning particles of tobacco, hot toxic gases” and “burning hot tar particulates” into their lungs voluntarily while sitting quietly in a chair, is not only improbable but physically impossible.

Now why doesn’t that seem to have occurred to Clive?

    • roobeedoo2 says:

Clive Bates is being lauded for pushing the e-cig agenda. But he remains one of the enemy. His support of e-cigs makes not a scrap of difference. Ultimately, that industry (if not the average consumer) will become the smokers enemy as well. Actually, it is now, all things considered. It doesn’t give a flying fuck about proper smokers rights and has thrived on the back of TC propaganda and smoking bans.

Those, “burning particles of tobacco, hot toxic gases” and “burning hot tar particulates”, are filtered through several inches of tobacco and the cig filter.

All the viruses and bacteria are killed and you are inhaling the only ‘clean, safe’, air that you breathe.

      (no “likes” – as yet)

This is what LIFE means to them.

Perhaps we need an investigation of what it takes to be a good anti-smoker.

Heartless and no respect appears to be the first things I attribute to them.

A source on the scene provided a description of the railing, which appeared to be metal, and was bent and twisted, with a cigarette lighter still sitting nearby.

Soooooo, they claim that smoking ’causes’ lung cancer; but, they have not been able to PROVE how!!!!!

Today, August 1, is World Lung Cancer Day

As part of the American Lung Association’s continuing efforts to find cures and improved treatments for lung cancer, the organization will be funding more than $850,000 for lung cancer research through its Lung Cancer Discovery Awards. .
    Studies currently being funded include:

    • and identifying the mechanisms by which tobacco leads to the cancerous transformation of lung cells.

      2004 COT SAYS NO PROOF
2013 ACS SAYS WE AINT GOT NO PROOF EITHER!

Lies began with direct smoking claims, they blossomed into second hand smoke claims then they went with total insanity at 3rd hand smoke claims…………..we have dissected this creature completely and have found it a barrel of JUNK SCIENCE. When we look around the world today at political agendas we find no matter what it is being claimed it uses the same junk science epidemiology styled linked to study to make the same wild claims………………..whether its global whining, shs, direct smoking, obesity, salt, sodas etc its all the same junk science!

The answer isnt in anyone thing causing cancer its in the bodys own immune system of cell repair! The ACS is only interested in a single issue cause………….as its what they were created to do remember!

Rockefeller also created the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Foundation, and the American Lung Association in this eugenics framework)

    • harleyrider1978 says:

I think what we have here is 2 public health groups
1 made to foster eugenics and prohibition and to create mad science to make the connection
2 one that is useful with no political agenda that is simply there to keep death and disease caused by viral and infectious etiologies from spreading and preventing them.

Number 2 is the one we all always thought was in control, not the nazis we have today at every turn!

      • harleyrider1978 says:

The best health dept is one that does nothing as nothing is going on they are truly needed for, which means they have done there job! But not today, the health dept is a social club for fanatics to parade around in making prohibition speeches and lobbying for it at every turn………….

I had quite forgotten this but when I was pregnant I took a craving for eating ash! my Dr. said not to worry it must be giving me something I needed and would not do me any harm. It only happened with one pregnancy and never had the craving again.

Cherie thats WEIRD! On the pregnant high driven hormone list of cravings that ranks as the WEIRDEST I ever encountered………..I thought chocolate frosties at 2 am with mustard sauce and pickles were bad, for Cherie all her man had to do was smoke a few! Dang the pleasures of life!

I was thinking about that when reading the comments here. It never occurred to me to try eating cigarette ash at any time. Perhaps I just did not need this particular something.
But at one time I did!
Being pregnant with my first child, I did seem to need to smoke more cigarettes than I usually do – I woke up in the night and NEEDED a cup of hot chocolate + 3 cigarettes!!!
After (pre-term) delivery (I would not have been able to deliver this big baby if left to go full term or even 2 weeks over) this stopped. Things went back to normal; I woke up in the night, turned around, and went back to sleep.

Rudd’s Tobacco Tax Slug: The Facts

Here are the facts on Kevin Rudd’s desperate attempt to gouge smokers to cover up his budget black hole:

FACT: The tobacco tax is one of the most regressive taxes in Australia, hitting already struggling poorest Australians hardest.

FACT: It won’t raise any revenue. This is the mining tax fiasco all over again.

FACT: Kevin Rudd promised his 2010 tobacco tax would raise an extra $5 billion. In reality, tobacco excise revenue fell

FACT: Deloitte found that the 2010 tobacco tax hike caused the illegal tobacco trade to jump 29%, costing the government $1.1 billion in foregone tobacco excise tax revenue.

FACT: Even the Government’s own implementation report on the 2010 excise tax increase admitted they have no idea if it raised a single cent

FACT: Kevin Rudd’s claim that smokers costs $35 billion is based on a lie

FACT: Smokers pay MUCH MORE than their fair share of tax

FACT: This is bad policy that will hurt struggling Australians, won’t raise a cent, and must be opposed

Smokers Rights Party Opposes Excise Increase – Smokers Rights Party
    29 Jul 2013 6:31PM
The Smokers’ Rights Party opposes further increases in the tobacco excise.

Smokers’ Rights Party spokesperson Clinton Mead says tobacco excise is already too high, victimising smokers with taxes well in excess of public health costs, as well as increasing incentives for organised crime and associated violence.

According to the Australian government commissioned National Drug Survey 2004/05, net public health costs of smoking were only $318.4 million, 15 times less than the tobacco excise collected that same year of over $5 billion.

With a 25% increase in excise in 2010, it is likely that difference is now even greater.

In addition, the illegal tobacco trade is now a multi-billion dollar industry. The more money there is in organised crime, the more violence results in fighting over the spoils.

The government is protecting crime gangs by overtaxing consumers of legal regulated tobacco products. Without this protection, crime gangs would not have a market.

The Smokers’ Rights Party is calling for an immediate reduction in tobacco excise, as well as the repeal of plain packaging and the reintroduction of the right of private property owners to determine smoking policies on their own property.

At the upcoming Federal Election, the Smokers’ Rights Party will be running candidates for the Senate in all states.

Just for fun. Next time you are at the grocery store look for the dog or cat food. Check out the ingredients and then try to find something like that in the human food section. Good luck with that.
