The Tobacco Control Cult

One thing I took away from my reading of the Tobacco Endgame was that Tobacco Control was an introverted community with its own set of ‘visionary scholars’ and ‘world thought leaders’, and its own utterly mad set of beliefs.

I mean, where else would one find people saying things like, “The cigarette is the deadliest artefact in the history of human civilisation,” or describing the the practice of smoking as a “pandemic”? Nowhere. Because nobody thinks that way. Nobody else is that mad.

Today it struck me that Tobacco Control was simply another cult. Back in the 70s lots of cults started appearing. The earliest, and perhaps most famous, was that of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, which the Beatles joined in the late 60s. But there were plenty more. There was Subud, and the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, and Hare Krishna. I even once came across the Emissaries of the Divine Light. Other famous ones include Scientology and Heaven’s Gate.

The principal difference between the Tobacco Control cult and these others was that none of them ever went mainstream, while the Tobacco Control cult did. And that’s why it’s far more dangerous than any of them. It captured the social and political elites. If Scientology had gone mainstream (which it almost did), we’d all have E-meters, issued by the NHS, and our doctors would be helping us to become ‘clears’. Instead we have smoking bans and No Smoking signs on everything.

One might say that Global Warming alarmism is another cult. And the EU ‘project’ as well.

If these new cults have been so successful, it’s because they mostly make some sort of appeal to science. In the case of Tobacco Control, it’s statistics. In the case of Global Warming, it’s physics. And since for the most part, most people know next to nothing about either, it’s easy to enlist them as believers, blindly trusting ‘experts’.

To my mind, however, the principal hallmark of a cult is irrationality. It’s quite easy to dismiss most cults as irrational, because they usually are, and they usually don’t even pretend to be rational. But in the case of Tobacco Control and Global Warming, there is an explicit claim to scientific rationality, usually backed up with scientific-looking charts, tables, graphs, and even equations. The result is that it takes a fairly substantial effort to break through the mask of rationality, and discover the irrational core.

In the case of Tobacco Control’s antismokers, I was greatly assisted back in the late 1960s by living in the house of Dr W, the first antismoker I ever encountered. He unwittingly inoculated me permanently against antismoking. Because I thought he was a bit mad – in fact more than a bit mad. And, 50 years on, I still think he was more than a bit mad. I don’t think I was mistaken in that assessment. What I was deeply mistaken about, however, was my belief back then that he was a harmless lone crank. He wasn’t alone at all.

Dr. W was really a member of the Tobacco Control cult. He probably knew both Richard Doll and George Godber very well. Theirs was a medical cult, largely confined to the medical profession. And it was one that eventually completely captured the medical profession in the UK sometime in the 1990s, much like a cancer metastasizing through a body.

And much the same goes for the Global Warming cult. That was one which was growing inside the physical sciences, and took them over around about the same time.

What’s the attraction of these cults? I’ve been reading Cults of Unreason, by Christopher Evans, online today. It was written in 1973, just as the various cults I’ve mentioned were gathering momentum. Early on, he writes:

And if science and present-day philosophy – currently obsessed with semantics and linguistics – are unprepared to offer help, while the great world religions offer only outdated, timeworn and implausible concepts, then the field is ripe as never before for stop-gap systems, pseudo-scientific philosophies, quasi-technological cults and new Messiahs to emerge. They are, in fact, already here, and there is evidence that their strength is growing.

I suppose that if irrationality is the central characteristic of these cults, the second characteristic – which follows inevitably from their irrationality – is that they are also profoundly destructive.

Tobacco Control’s smoking bans and demonisation of smokers is both deeply socially destructive and economically destructive, while producing zero health benefits.

Global Warming alarmism is arguably even more economically destructive, as it sets out to replace fossil fuels with wind and solar energy sources. In a parliamentary climate change committee meeting yesterday, Peter Lilley told the assembled zealots:

“Those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad.”

And they are indeed mad. Just like Tobacco Control is mad.

It’s probably their sheer destructiveness that eventually can no longer be tolerated, and leads to the zealots being driven out. And this is going to happen both with Global Warming and Tobacco Control (and all its associated healthist junk science). And most likely the EU as well, because it embodies and enables both Tobacco Control and Global Warming alarmism, while bankrupting entire nations and bankrupting itself.

The EU ‘project’ is, of course, yet another irrational and ultimately deeply destructive cult. Why is a European superstate better than a Europe of separate sovereign states? Because, Manuel Barroso tells us, we will be able to sit at the ‘top table’ with other superstates. Everything must be sold so that, in effect, we can dine at the same table with Sean Connery and Clint Eastwood.

Ultimately, the aim of all these cults is to make a bunch of nobodies into somebodies. Tobacco Control and Global Warming and the EU has made a bunch of nobodies into ‘global thought leaders’. Nobody would have heard of any of these tyrannical, conceited bastards otherwise.

Me? I have no ambitions. I’m perfectly content to be nobody. I just want to be able to sit in a pub and drink a pint of beer and smoke a cigarette while I’m about it.

Great thoughts as always Frank, the tobacco bans woke many people up to the so called global warming cult and what is going on with the eu and big Pharma, they all stink. Any J&J product has been banned from my house given their involvement. We had the “formaldehyde” advert to contend with, while they used it it in their baby products, bloody hypocrites. You just need to google how many boycotted their products for differant reasons than me. I cannot copy and paste the information here, but it is on the net.

In proper science, the first thing is observation. After that, comes explanation. After that comes prediction. After that comes proof. But in the case of epidemiology (as it is now being used), there is no prediction. There are only vague possibilities. This is because all of epidemiology today is not based upon immediate past events (such as a cholera outbreak or a flu epidemic) but upon long-term past circumstances which have ceased to exist.

If a Bill is introduced into Parliament to bring in plain packaging, then it is at that point that the evidence should be contested in court. It should be made clear, before the matter is discussed in Parliament that the science is crap. If then, Parliament make an ACT, then, at least, it will be abundantly clear that the decision is irrational.

OT but wow what a day!
Had a road rage idot today a true hothead I nearly had to shoot! It started at a stop lite where a cop had a car pulled over I was looking to see if it was clear before turning the idiot starts blowing his horn rolls down his window cussing at me left and right. Then the Idiot tries to run me off the road with his kids inside and wife then he pulls into mcds and waits on me to pull in.

I did right beside him and I got out staying to the police criminal stop profile on my vehicle at the door and standing but bent. He jumped and dashed from his door and then heeled it quickly when he saw My hand at the ready where my gun was. His cussing stopped and we exchanged a few more words, But then I never even exposed the gun to his sight. He backed down and I yelled fuck you coward at him then the fucker pulls off and blocks me while his fat ass bitch wife writes my tag down………I yelled dude you just dont know how close you came to getting killed. You best back off and run….He did and his kids didnt get no mcds…..A real hot head cussing and carrying on. I stayed cool for the most part except at the end but it really bothers me this asshole not only does this with his kids and wife in the car he well could ahve forced me to kill him infront of his very family……….Thats what truly upset me and the idiot didnt even know Im adead shot at 12 feet!
Thats my first incident since I got my carry permit where I actually needed it. My wifes still tore up over it as it was her side of the car he was trying for and she says how do you stay so cool in that mess………Told her training!

Where he messed up was trying to collide his car into my wifes jeep thats vehicular homicide charge If he had hurt anyone besides a direct assault with intent to do bodil injury making me fullly legal to shoot him if he came further at me. I couldnt just pull on up to the drive thru after that, the man had to be faced down as there was no telling what he may have doone from behind to us after what had already transpired……I just hope I never have to shoot a crazy SOB in front of his wife and kids,I hate the man for even making me be in that position. Its also a reason that I should always have my gun handy. Theres a lot of assholes and hotheads in the world today.

I just ask WHY ME LORD!

I had an incident once: my fault to start with as I stalled coming out of a turning onto the main road, held up a guy for about 2 seconds while I righted things, waved profuse apologies. But he didn’t forgive. He yelled obscenities out of his window, and then got in front of me and kept stopping dead, did it over and over for about 2 miles. Of course, I had to stop every time he did, and so did all the cars behind me. Hooting and tooting fit to bust. I thought, ‘What is wrong with this man? Isn’t there enough trouble in the world?’ I hated him – I know how you felt!

Further to the Cigarette That Saved Boston

Neighbour ended massive American manhunt for Boston Marathon bombers when he went for a cigarette in his garden… and found terrorist hiding in his boat

“When David Henneberry nipped outside for a cigarette, he had no idea it would lead to a bloody shootout in his back garden and the capture of the most wanted man in America.

Like thousands of other residents of Watertown, a sleepy middle-class suburb of Boston, the 66-year-old had been cooped up in his home, at 67 Franklin Street, since police imposed a curfew in the early hours of Friday.”

“But by 5.30pm, Dzhokhar still hadn’t been found and the curfew was lifted”.

“Mr Henneberry, whose ‘passion’ is his 24-ft white fibreglass Seahawk pleasure cruiser, strolled into his garden at 6.05pm – and immediately noticed the tarpaulin covering his prized boat had been disturbed.

Neighbour George Pizzuto said: ‘He got his ladder and put it up against the side of the boat and climbed up. He saw blood on it and what he thought was a body lying at the back. He immediately ran inside and called the police.”

“At 7.25pm there was a burst of gunfire as Dzhokhar and police exchanged more than 40 shots, quickly followed by a series of bangs as flash bombs were thrown into the boat to ‘smoke him out’.

A bomb squad robot was also sent in to peel back the tarpaulin, while FBI negotiators using megaphones attempted to talk Dzhokhar down. Police footage later showed the suspect surrendering.”

I think that for something to be truly a ‘cult’ there has to be a charismatic leader. TC doesn’t have one, does it. I see it more as one of those weird ideas that get in the air and take root as ‘the source of all evil’ – like witches, communists, paedophiles. Never mind that more than half of the world’s children are starving and all manner of injustices and horrors are going on and nobody’s doing a damned thing about them, this one thing – witchcraft, communism, paedophilia, and now smoking, gets turned into the great Evil that must be eradicated. It’s the modern version of the fairy-story’s wicked wolf in the forest. It seems we always have to have a ‘wicked wolf’ on which everything bad can be blamed.

  7. Rose says:

Tobacco control in our country didn’t start out mad, but just like erasing the Medieval Warm Period because it didn’t fit with AGW theory, over time ,unhelpful bits were simply ignored.

I have often used this quote taken from studies of the history of the NHS involvement with anti-smoking.

“Bessy Braddock, Labour MP for Liverpool Exchange, favoured an environmental explanation, and therefore found the urban–rural divide a barrier to acceptance of the smoking–lung cancer connection.
‘In view of the fact that cigarette and pipe smoking goes on all over the country, it is folly to say that it is the main cause of lung cancer.’

Yesterday, I went to check that the quote was accurate and look for the rest of the speech.

It’s worth reading the whole speech, but here is a section of it with that quote seen in context. The whole debate gives you the confused position in Parliament at the time, epidemiology against real data.

    LUNG CANCER (SMOKING)
House of Commons Debate 19 March 1953

    Mrs.Braddock 342

“The Report of the General Register Office on the Regional and Local Differences in Cancer Death Rates was published in 1947. Anybody who is particularly interested in the statistics will find that the death rate and the incidence rate of lung cancer differ very greatly in different parts of the country.

In view of the fact that cigarette and pipe smoking goes on all over the country, it is folly to say that it is the main cause of lung cancer. There must be a cause; there may be one or two; but the Ministry should be very insistent and should take a much more detailed interest in the investigations which are now going on in Liverpool and Manchester on the question of smoke pollution and the degree of irritant in the smoke over big housing estates and areas where nothing is done to treat the smoke before it is emitted from chimneys.

Every possible avenue should be explored because there is no doubt—as the hon. Member for Peterborough said—that this subject scares people, and some of them are worried to death about it. The only way to ease that worry is to let them know that every possible avenue concerning the initial cause of lung cancer is being investigated, and that those organisations that are doing something about it are having the active and fullest support of the Ministry of Health in their endeavours to solve this very difficult problem”
    http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1953/mar/19/lung-cancer-smoking

This debate was of course was held only one year after the estimated 12,000 deaths from the Great London Smog. 4,000 in the first few days.

Later, the government of the day persuaded the Medical Research Council to omit air pollution entirely in their report on lung cancer and concentrate solely on smoking.

“So the politicians asked the MRC to re-examine their statement. Both statements, so it was commented, had obvious political implications. On 31 May 1957, Lord Home, the lord president of the council (responsible for the MRC), reported back on the changes made in the statement.

The MRC had re-examined their draft and proposed to modify the references to atmospheric pollution which implied that it might be responsible for up to 30 per cent of such deaths.

The section would read instead, ‘on balance it seems likely that atmospheric pollution plays some part in causing the disease, but a relatively minor one in comparison with cigarette smoking’.”

      http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7857370.stm

Of course when anti tobacco really started kicking off in 1962, under the 50 year rule no one would be able to find out that the Government had made the MRC deliberately distort the figures until 1987 at the earliest.

And without that knowledge and any real idea of the plant chemistry, cigarettes could appear on the epidemiology alone as ““the most lethal instrument devised by man for peaceful use” to those already convinced by Doll’s original study.

I think it’s important to go back to the beginning, without the embroidery and embellishments that followed over the years, which were designed to make people give up smoking. It all becomes very much clearer, to me at least.

I doubt I shall ever forget about the associations between the Rockefeller Foundation , Eugenics, Nazi science, the Socialist Medical Association’s admiration for the Public Health system in Communist Russia,(which appears to have provided at least part of the original inspiration for the NHS) and their collaboration in the beginnings of anti-tobacco in Britain.

But when that lot crashed up against our parliamentarians out of the blue, they were able to discussed it rationally. The madness came much later after serious political interference.

In case you missed it, Doll mentioned Schairer and Schöniger in Advances in Cancer Research, vol 3, p 9 in 1955 and Doll and Hill noted Müller’s paper 1939 in “our first paper on the association between cigarette smoking and lung cancer”

Endgame – The case for Abolition

So yes, Richard Doll was perfectly well aware of the Nazi efforts, especially as he visited Nazi Germany himself as a student in 1936, according to Proctor and his own testimony.

      Dear Rose

It would seem this is an admission of wilful neglect for approximately 30% of all lung cancer deaths since that time. Neglecting to discover non-smoking causes of lung cancer has condemned millions to an early death. Culpability is shared between those in government and those employed by the MRC.

Strange how those in positions of supposed ‘authority’ take it upon themselves to lie without conscience and accept other peoples’ deaths as collateral damage whilst they pursue some agenda all their own. One wonders how they benefited from this lie.

Most will be dead now. I hope they are in a hell appropriate to their crime.

Their heirs in Big Tobacco Control must be fully aware of this piece of history and are therefore culpable of murder – that is wilful killing – since they are not merely ignoring non-tobacco causes of lung cancer, but actively claiming tobacco as the only cause.

Their agenda seems to be a mix of profit, power and puritanical obsession in uncertain proportion.

Abuse of Tobacco and Carcinoma of Lungs.
        Journal of American Medicine 1939

“The author observed lately a relatively large number of patients with carcinoma of the lungs at the municipal hospital in Cologne.

Prompted by this observation he carried out a statistical survey on ninety-six dead patients as to smoking habits and other factors acting on the respiratory tracts, such as soot, dust, smoke, tar, vapors, exhaust gases, coal, metal dust and chemicals.
Previous diseases of the respiratory tracts were likewise recorded.

Of the ninety-six persons, eighty-six were male and showed the following result as to smoking habits: extreme smokers twenty- five (29.07 per cent), very heavy smokers eighteen (20.93 per cent), heavy smokers thirteen (15.12 per cent), moderate smokers twenty-seven (31.39 per cent) and nonsmokers three (3.49 per cent).

Comparison between these and eighty-six healthy persons as to daily consumption of tobacco disclosed that the healthy persons smoked considerably less and that most of them were moderate and medium heavy smokers.

On the basis of this statistical survey and bearing in mind the positive results obtained in animal experiments *, the author concludes that the great increase of tobacco consumption is primarily responsible for the increase of primary carcinoma of the lungs.

The fact that about one third of the subjects surveyed smoked moderately or not at all indicates the presence of other cancerigenic factors besides smoking, such as influenza and industrial working conditions.

The great significance of the latter can be inferred from various indications but needs further study. Members of families disposed to cancer and persons with chronic catarrhs of the respiratory tracts should be dissuaded from smoking.”

        http: //toxicology.usu.edu/endnote/Proctor-Nazi-war-tobacco.htm

        Richard Doll

“Some, however, had been sufficiently impressed to try to produce cancer with tobacco tar on the skin of laboratory animals.

Roffo succeeded in doing so in the Argentine in 1931, using rabbits, but his results were generally dismissed in the UK and the US on the grounds that the tobacco had been burnt at unrealistically high temperatures.

Experiments in Britain were negative (Leitch, 1928; Passey, 1929) apart from one which produced one cancer in 50 animals and led Cooper et al (1932) to conclude that “tobacco tar is relatively unimportant in the causation of cancers”.

          Dear Rose

Neglect over non-tobacco causes of lung cancer leaves our current crop of people using taxpayers’ money to fund their obsessions and/or lifestyles liable to all manner of complaints for fraud and misappropriation of public funds, as well as wilfully diverting attention away from real science and real medicine which could have saved tens of thousands of lives.

I thought they might escape a murder charge because of the year and a day rule, but that was abolished by the Law Reform (Year and a Day Rule) Act 1996, so they may be liable for murder, subject to proving intent, and manslaughter at the very least.

I suspect they will get away with it, if only because the corruption runs deep in the medical profession and the politicians and bureaucrats have been so thoroughly ‘on-side’ for so long that they may feel at risk if there were any moves to bring Big Tobacco Control to court to answer charges.

    Smoker catches the last TERRORIST!

(Dave Urbanski) — David Henneberry, an avid boater and member of the Watertown Yacht Club, walked outside to smoke a cigarette just after Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick lifted the curfew on Boston residents at 6 p.m. Friday.

Puffing away, Henneberry noticed the tarp that covered his rare, 22-foot pleasure cruiser—a white Seahawk with blue trim and a fiberglass hull, reported the New York Daily News—wasn’t on correctly.

“Then he saw that one of the straps was hanging loose,” his stepson Robert Duffy told the Daily News. “He picked it up and saw it had been cut. He found it incredibly odd.”

Henneberry got a small ladder, climbed up to reach the boat deck, and flipped back his tarp “and saw a pool of blood,” Duffy added. “And then he saw what he thought was a body.”

Henneberry jumped off the ladder and ran inside, dialing 911 as he went.

The “body” was the second Boston bombing suspect, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev — alive.

For those of you who don’t have a TV, thought I might keep you up to speed with the latest in Eurospeak. They’ve coined an economical phrase for all the separatist movements, like Scotland, Catalan, Basque and so on:

    “Populistic Localism”

Seem the EU has a real dilemma, namely “should we allow them”!!!!!!!!

Mr Salmond may think, “well of course they should” and – if so- then surely he must be mad keen to encourage the Northern and Western Island that want to splinter from Scotland!

Oh I do so like the way this thing’s shaking out!

Indeed it might seem that not everyone wants to sit at the big table, perhaps it’s possible that some folks just want to get rid of the layer upon layer of politics – and take responsibility for their own destiny.

Methinks I’ll wait until they have a formula for this populistic localism, then sod-off to Corsica. Solar farms, 3 mile fishing zone, offshore banking and a muckle great free trade zone. 10% income tax, no VAT and (officially) no smoking ban (‘cos they don’t really have one as is)!

The explicit claim to scientific rationality, usually backed up with scientific-looking charts, tables, graphs, and even equations to lobby for their utopic aim of a tobacco-free world are a kind of proof of Tobacco Control’s irrationality.
There were rumours even back in the 70s that “smoking would eventually be outlawed” and I do remember, whilst lighting up, asking the old blokes in the “Kneipe” (pub) WHERE they heard that and HOW this was to come about. They were rather vague about the source of information but what they predicted pretty much came true about 40 years later.

The first Climate Warming critique I encountered was actually my mother. There were “alarming” reports about an ozone hole over the antarctic, “caused” by deodorant sprays as well as cows farting. (That’s how she summarized it). Since my mother was quite a strong willed personality, everyone got to know her view on climate warming. And her view was that people were going stupid by not listening to what common sense has to say. Incidentally, there were two other things my mother did not like; tobacco smell and tomatoes. She still owned quite a number of ashtrays for guests and made the most delicious tomatoe salad for others to eat. In her view both were a nuisance but neither was dangerous contrary to climate science. In her view this was dangerous.

It’s probably their sheer destructiveness that eventually can no longer be tolerated, and leads to the zealots being driven out. And this is going to happen both with Global Warming and Tobacco Control (and all its associated healthist junk science).

In Germany we have a saying: “Luegen haben kurze Beine”. Losely translated it means that Lies will always catch up with you. No wonder Tobacco Control is such a mess.

Brigitte, we have a similar saying here in the UK – “the truth will always out” – which says essentially the same thing. And I think it’s this which is causing no small measure of panic in the Tobacco Control camp – as evidenced by increasingly bizarre links to increasingly obscure illnesses, the increasingly-intense torturing of statistics to prove a negative link to diseases which have been positively linked to smoking (e.g. Alzheimers, allergic asthma etc), and all sorts of other hysterical-sounding stories which have appeared over the last few years.

Because, you see, they’re running out of time, particularly now that there are numerous smoking bans all over the place. In many ways – as is so often the case with groups who have built up a power base on a foundation of lies – they are fast becoming a victim of their own fraudulently-based success. Because, with fewer people smoking regularly, less opportunities for those who do smoke to do so as often, and with ever-decreasing opportunities for non-smokers to come into contact with environmental tobacco smoke, it’s only a matter of time before the even the most brainwashed members of public start to wonder why the number of people falling ill with all those so-called “smoking related” illnesses continues to rise unabated; this will become a particular problem when people they personally know who are active smoke-avoiders start to become ill and die, supposedly from an illness caused by something they’ve never come into contact with! Reality always bites hardest when it affects people personally, and this is the scenario which the antis most fear. They did, of course, try the old “if your great great grandparents smoked then a smoking-related illness is in your genes,” but that stretched the credibility of even the keenest drone just a bit too far and, it appears, has been quietly shelved.

No wonder Tobacco Control is in a rush to get tobacco made illegal. The longer they wait, the greater the chances are that the public will (finally!) rumble the fact that they’ve been duped all along and that smoking is actually nowhere near as lethal as it’s been made out to be, or (shock! horror!) even that in some cases it can be positively beneficial for health. And the fact that that knowledge will come from their own personal experience and that of their friends and families will – as it always does – trump any amount of “education,” “advice,” or propaganda from self-appointed “experts” in the Tobacco Control field. Because it always does.
