Send Me To Timbuktu

H/T Fredrik Eich for the news from Timbuktu that antismoking Islamists had been driven out of town, and people were happily smoking in the streets again.

Channel 4’s Lindsay Hillsum blogs about it here:

In recent months, the Islamist police in Gao have dragged suspected thieves and others to Sharia courts which have ordered the amputation of limbs and other punishments. Even smoking could earn you a flogging.

Her video report from Timbuktu is embedded in her blog post.

I thought she said that the locals would ask in shops for ‘secrets’ when they wanted a secret cigarette. But ‘secret’ is probably just the way they pronounced ‘cigarette’.

Human Rights Watch also reported:

One militiaman told Human Rights Watch: “Some on it [the list] are obvious because they took up arms and looted everything we worked for, or have been walking around beating people for smoking or not covering their heads. Others have collaborated – cooking, encouraging our children to join up. Do they think we don’t know who they are?”

Even the BBC gave it a brief mention.

But people are now able to go out.

People have freedom. People are happy. They can move about freely.

They are not under pressure.

People are smoking, people can do anything they want.

It must be disconcerting for Tobacco Control to see freedom and happiness linked so explicitly to smoking, and see themselves dimly reflected in that mirror as being no better than punitive Islamist fundamentalists.

But smoking has always been a symbol of freedom, and it always will be.

If you can’t sit in a cafe and drink a coffee and smoke a cigarette, you’re not free.

And today they’re free to do that in Timbuktu. They are more free than I am, for sure.

All of which made me grin wryly at this remark in an ex-smoker’s blog:

I hate smoke. I’m not one of those ex-smokers who thinks that all smokers should be sent to Timbuktu…

I wouldn’t mind being sent to Timbuktu at all.

Just in passing, Frank. Have you noticed how many articles/comments/items written by people who are clearly (from the content of their writing) antis – sometimes quite virulent ones – start their articles these days with phrases like that, i.e. “I’m not one of those people who thinks …” or “I’m not anti-smoking by a long way, but …” or “I respect any adult’s right to smoke, but …” ? There was one over at Simon Clark’s place only yesterday.

I wonder if even dedicated adherents of the anti cause have started to realise that they and their predecessors have somewhat overplayed their hand with all their swivel-eyed zeal and overblown prophecies of doom and that being anti-smoking – for the majority of the public – is now seen as a bit beyond the pale? I guess that may well be in part because the major cheerleaders of the anti cause certainly come across as either terribly fuddy-duddy and middle-class and unexciting (like our Debs) or, like Glanz, downright strange. Either way, none of the leading lights of the anti-smoking movement could in any way be described – as I think one of your commenters so aptly described them – as “the kind of person you’d want to invite to a party.” And the increasing number of writers from their own side who seem to be trying to distance themselves from this sour-faced or oddball image by their two-line disclaimers at the start of each article would tend to indicate that even antis themselves have at least subconsciously recognised how uncool it is to be anti-smoking these days.

They remind me a bit of people of yesteryear, when racism was starting to become the big no-no, who would always precede an overtly racist comment with “Now, I’m not a racist, but …” or “I’ve got nothing against black people, but …” before launching into a tirade which illustrated their racist credentials only too clearly. Some people still do it, though not so many, thankfully. No-one was fooled by it, of course, any more than anyone is fooled by the anti-smokers’ protestations that they are not antis, immediately before spewing forth countless anti-smoking sentiments. After all, if it looks like poo, and smells like poo, then – no matter what you call it – it is poo!

I hadn’t, actually. I’ve noticed a growing weariness with public health measures over the past few years, but not what you’ve seen. Although the ex-smoker I quoted was, I suppose, distancing herself from being one of the hang ’em and flog ’em brigade. It was the mention of Timbuktu that caught my attention, not the slight distancing.

But I was a bit surprised that Lindsay Hilsum reported people smoking in the streets of Timbuktu, now that the fundamentalists had been driven out. I couldn’t help but immediately think of our own fundamentalists. I was surprised that it wasn’t edited out of her report, or that John Snow didn’t say something to the effect that ‘It sounds like the Islamists got at least one thing right in Timbuktu, Lindsay!’ But it wasn’t edited out. And he didn’t say that.

Anyway, I shall keep an eye out for what you have observed.

Only yesterday I went to the local supermarket to buy tobacco. I asked the girl behind the counter what other brands of tobacco they have, only to be told that there is a new law which forbids them to tell me. How come I didn’t know about this? Were we told and I have missed it?

Right now the Mali people enjoy greater freedom than we do. I still cannot go to a local pub and have a drink with a cigarette. If I wish to smoke I have to go outside, leaving my drink behind. On returning to where I left my drink I face a choice: if it is still where I left it, do I risk finishing this drink? The last time (over 1 year ago) I did not have to make this choice; my drink had disappeared.

The Mali people will very soon encounter a new invasion; the anti-smokers. They will be “educated” that SHS is a killer and that they will loose limbs and die if they continue to celebrate their freedom with smoking.

All of which made me grin wryly at this remark in an ex-smoker’s blog:

The writer continues to describe how the smell of cigarette smoking reminds her of her mother, described as a single parent, raising 6 children whilst also working as a teacher. There is no way I would have liked to be in her shoes; imagine the stress levels 24/7!!!! You have to deal with EVERYTHING coming your way alone.

As Jaxthefirst quite rightly says, the anti-smokers are easily spotted. There are 5 people replying to the invite to tell their stories about smoking. Here is some space for rabid anti-smokers!!! One of them actually mentions “third-hand” smoke and with that “we all are affected”…… Laugh of the day!

Well, yes. We here are living under the Taliban, the Committees of Virtue and Vice. And as beobrigitte says, they don’t (yet) actually amputate our fingers but right now in NYC they’re running a “public service” commercial with a woman, all of whose fingers are gone–medically amputated as are her toes–because of some disease or other caused by smoking. So they’re threatening us with it in their roundabout way. Psy war. Psychological dismemberment. Corporeal punishment befalling those who sin. Reminds me of the Things You Shouldn’t Do or You’ll Go Blind.

Islamists in north Mali burn cigarettes, whip smokers

“A youth from the north Mali town, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “I received 40 lashes because I was smoking and continued to smoke after I was told not to.”

A civil servant in the town, also asking not to be named, said he was whipped even though he was not smoking.
“It was my friend who was smoking but they whipped both of us saying that the cigarette is Satan. Shopkeepers who still have cigarettes hide them and to smoke, you have to hide,” he said.”

Edict not funded by NYC mayor: Muhammadiyah – 2010

“An organization owned by the mayor of New York City has channeled US$393,234 to Muhammadiyah as part of a global anti-tobacco campaign.

But the Islamic organization denied the funding influenced its recent edict banning smoking.

A Fattah Wibisono, a deputy secretary at Muhammadiyah’s council tasked with issuing religious edicts, acknowledged that his organization was cooperating with the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, a philanthropic organization established in 2006 by Michael R. Bloomberg to fight tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries.

The $125 million global initiative was extended with a new $250 million commitment in 2008. The initiative funds related projects in Indonesia and many other countries. Its website says that Muhammadiyah was a recipient of grants totaling $393,234 from November 2009 to October 2011.”

The Bloomberg Initiative says on its website, http://www.tobaccocontrolgrants.org, its program with Muhammadiyah aims “to mobilize public support towards obtaining religious policy on tobacco control and to support FCTC [Framework Convention on Tobacco Control] accession”.

    Thu Mar 22, 2012
“(Reuters) – Michael Bloomberg’s charitable foundation will commit $220 million over the next four years to fight tobacco use globally, including for the funding of legal challenges against the industry.

Calling tobacco “a scourge all over the world” and accusing cigarette makers of “nefarious activities,” the New York City mayor said at a news conference that his foundation will focus on low and moderate-income countries where nearly 80 percent of smokers live, like Russia, China, India, Indonesia and Bangladesh.”

That means Bill Gates likely has connections to the terrorists too……….Since its the Bloomy&Gates joint money for tobacco control they put together here awhile back…….

Gates Foundation, Bloomberg Commit $500 Million to Global Anti-Tobacco Campaign

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg have announced a combined pledge of $500 million to support efforts to combat the global tobacco epidemic by helping governments in developing countries implement proven anti-tobacco policies and increase their funding for tobacco control.

Bloomberg expanded an initial $125 million commitment made through the Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use with an additional four-year, $250 million commitment, while the Gates Foundation will invest $125 million over five years, including a $24 million grant to the Bloomberg initiative, to fight the epidemic. The foundation also will support complementary efforts to reduce high rates of tobacco use in countries such as China and India, as well as help prevent tobacco use from taking root in Africa.

The Bloomberg initiative supports efforts to increase tobacco taxes, change the image of tobacco, protect nonsmokers from exposure to other people’s smoke, and help people quit. It also supports a rigorous tobacco-use and policy-monitoring system as well as public sector education and advocacy efforts. With the Gates funding, the initiative intends to accelerate implementation of proven tobacco-control strategies and build economic evidence to support tobacco control over the next two years. Unless action is taken, as many as a billion people — more than two-thirds in the developing world — could die from tobacco-caused illnesses in this century.

“Tobacco-caused diseases have emerged as one of the greatest health challenges facing developing countries,” said Bill Gates. “The good news is, we know what it takes to save millions of lives, and where efforts exist, they are working.”

N.Y. Mayor Bloomberg to limit supply of pain medication in city hospitals

“New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg unveiled a new initiative Thursday to limit the supply of painkillers to the city’s emergency rooms in hopes of reducing prescription drug addiction.

Under the new city policy, most public hospital patients will no longer be able to get more than three days’ worth of narcotic painkillers. Critics argue the move would hurt poor and uninsured patients who use emergency rooms as their primary care doctor.

“Supposing it is really true so you didn’t get enough painkillers and you did have to suffer a little bit,” Bloomberg said on his weekly radio show. “The other side of the coin is people are dying and there’s nothing perfect. …There’s nothing that you can possibly do where somebody isn’t going to suffer and it’s always the same group [claiming], ‘Everybody is heartless.’ Come on, this is a very big problem.”

Mayor Bloomberg: I Have Responsibility Not ‘to Force Anyone to Do Anything’

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg stated Wednesday that he believes it is not his responsibility “to force anyone to do anything” in his role as a politician.

Reporters asked Bloomberg at a press conference if he remembered the moment he became interested in going after illegal guns, and he responded:

No, but I did get interested in public health a long time ago, as you know. And I think, as mayor, my responsibility is to do everything I can is to do everything I can to protect the health and safety and increase the longevity of the people that live in this city. As an American, and as a human being, I have a responsibility to not push—to not force anybody to do anything but to explain what I think and to educate people to the extent of what I believe that would be in their self-interest. And I think there are certain—lots of kinds of dangerous activities—if you want to do it, they may be things that I wouldn’t choose to do, but I would protect your rights to do that.

In March of 2012, Mayor Bloomberg banned food donations to homeless shelters because the city could not assess salt, fat, and fiber content in the donated food. Bloomberg also led the charge against the sale of sugary sodas that were sold in 16-ounce containers or larger.

In 2007, the Bloomberg administration reintroduced a measure that would mandate chain restaurants to post calorie information on their menus. Last Spring, Mayor Bloomberg pushed a law that would require New York City buildings to inform potential tenants if a building had a smoke-free policy.

“This is their blueprint,” Audrey Silk, a smoker and founder of Citizens Lobbying Against Smoker Harassment, told Crain’s. “Acclimate the public to an idea so when they do come through with the force of law, the backlash is muted.”

      It doesn’t even make sense.

You have to laugh though, I just typed that statement into google without quotes and the fifth entry down is “What Is a Narcissistic Sociopath?”

“A narcissistic sociopath is someone with a combination of narcissistic personality disorder and definitive behavioral signs of sociopathy. People with narcissism are characterized by their excessive and persistent need for others’ admiration and positive reinforcement. They generally have grandiose opinions of themselves and believe they are superior to other people. Narcissists are also frequently convinced that they are above the normal responsibilities and obligations of everyday life, so they usually have significant difficulties maintaining employment or relationships as a result. The narcissistic sociopath has this type of personality along with a noticeable lack of regard for the rights of others and a tendency to regularly violate those rights.

One noted difference between a narcissistic sociopath and people with narcissism alone is that the narcissist with the sociopathy reacts strongly and sometimes even violently to negative feedback. True sociopaths generally do not respond to criticism or care what others may think of them. A narcissistic sociopath is unable to tolerate criticism and needs constant praise, as well as deference from other people. Many with this condition present themselves in the best light possible and are able to easily charm others to gain their trust.

Va. lawmakers shoot down smoking law

RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 17 (UPI) — Virginia lawmakers Thursday decided to not make smoking in a car with a child present illegal.

The legislation, which would have banned smoking in a vehicle if a child under 13 is present, was proposed by Del. Joe Morrissey, The (Norfolk) Virginia-Pilot reported.

It would have been a secondary offense, meaning the offender could be ticketed only after being stopped for another offense. Those cited would have received a $100 civil penalty.

When arguing for his bill, Morrissey said because children’s respiratory systems are not fully developed, they are more susceptible to second-hand smoke. “We need to protect children just like we protect them with a car seat,” the Henrico County Democrat said.
